Banlao Boat Restaurant

The Banlao restaurant is located along the riverside road. It is on a long floating boat which heaps of tables and Lao food to choose from. During the dry season the restaurant/boat (December to April) sits on the Mekong river embankment but during the wet season (May to November) the boat is up near the road height. The food is very nice as the menu is in Lao and also English (some spelling is funny). Nice cold Beerlao and great view of Pakse. The staff are limited in their speaking English capability but if you point to what you want on the menu, they will write it down.

My boyfriend and I ate here after learning they make pizza and pasta. The staff was immediately rude, laughing at us and walking away when my boyfriend was talking to them in Laos. They stood close to our table and stared at us the entire time we ate, and when we attempted to talk to them (in Lao) they would roll their eyes and walk away. Finally my boyfriend said (in Lao) "You dont speak Lao? Do you speak any language?" This made them angry enough that they backed off. They were about 6 young girls, probably teenagers. The food was a welcome change from the Asian cusine. The eggplant pasta was very good. The marinara sauce was light, and the pasta fresh. The pizza was also good, but not to be compared to pizza in the US. The pepperoni was actually hard salami and the sauce had a bit of a bbq sauce taste to it. We enjoyed it, though it is different than typical western pizza. We also got a cesar salad. The vegetables were very fresh, though the croutons were simply sliced toast and the dressing is simply red vinegar. We returned the next day and ordered two pizzas to go. The staff was still rude. The cheese pizza is tasty, with basil and a sweet sauce. Again, it is different than typical western pizza, but good nonetheless. The pizzas were about $6 each, and they were medium sized. There are other restaurants nearby that serve pasta and burgers (sabidee restaurant just down the road). The owner there was very friendly and his food looked good. If you are not set on eating pizza, and prefer a friendly atmosphere, I suggest trying a different restaurant.

Many restaurants in Pakse offer some Lao, Thai, Vietnamese, and European. We didn't find nearly as many that helped you sort through it all like Xuanmai Restaurant. With suggested meals by location or allowing you to order individually, it was easy to get what you want. My husband and I both had soups and found them very tasty. Preferred even to DaoLin even though it doesn't get the same food traffic based on location.

This restaurant is in a beautifully restored colonial building more reminiscent of Luang Prabang than Pakse. The menu is not extensive but covers European and Asian food. I only had a spaghetti carbonara this time and it was excellent. The steaks and other meats look appetizing and I'll be back for one of them on my next visit. Each table has a button for calling for service or paying your bill, I'm amazed I've never seen this anywhere else it seems so obvious.

I came here with high hopes after reading the reviews but was very let down. The drinks were a very reasonable price, and the coffee machines looked great.I ordered my standard long black and I the half full cup of coffee I received was very watery and next to no Crema. The ambience of the place wasn't too nice, all the furniture was old. The staff were semi-friendly.I didn't eat so cannot comment on the food but the menu was quite extensive. If you like coffee you're much better off seeking another cafe like Delta.
