We had a great meal here! The food was good value, nicely presented and service swift! We had intended to go to the Masons Arms however it was busy and seemed quite claustrophobic! Although we were passing here and popped in, we were really glad we found it! Thank you for your review, we are so glad you decided to stop off with us for a meal and glad you enjoyed! We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

My husband and I have been going to the Lake District for years and have often commented that the tucked away Gateway Inn looked nice. This holiday we actually went in for a bite to eat. The staff made us and our Scottie feel very welcome. The place itself is lovely and I can only imagine that the dog friendly accommodation would be as equally high standard as downstairs. When our food came it was absolutely delicious. The portions were very generous, nicely presented and beautifully seasoned. We had stopped in the lakes to break the journey to Scotland, on the way home we did the same again and we had to go back to the Gateway Inn for food. On our second visit we were just as pleased with both the welcome and the food. I can’t recommend this little gem enough, absolutely superb.

We booked a table for a Sunday afternoon and were initially seated on a very small table so asked to move as we were planning to share starters. The starters we chose were really good, especially the mezze platter with guacamole, hummus and feta salad - but please serve an adequate amount of pitta bread for the volume of the dips! The haloumi sticks were delicious with the cheese still soft - just lovely. Three of us had the Sunday roast - pork for me and beef for two - this is probably where we went wrong as nothing was particularly hot, and the beef was overcooked - it was 6pm so maybe that was the issue as my husband chose a steak with peppercorn sauce off the main menu and his dish was very good. Service was good and we sat in a nice, light dining room. I would eat here again but unless I came actually at lunchtime on a Sunday would eat from the main menu.

Watermill Inn Restaurant

We were recommended to try the Watermill by friends. They have their own microbrewery on site and the beer they produce is pretty good. The food is average and the service a little disinterested despite going there on a quiet night. The menu is extensive but formulaic and the food had a slightly re-heated feel about it. Decor in the place wasn't helped by an excess of cheap Halloween themed decorations which detracted rather than enhanced the atmosphere (But there again I am no fan of Halloween so might just be me. And my wife!). If looking for a simple pub meal in the area the Eagle and Child in Staveley is way better and more atmospheric.Dear RichardVUK, we're sorry to read that you found our pub to be "average", this is very disappointing. We strive to offer great customer service so we're surprised that you found staff to be "disinterested", if this was the case, then we are truly sorry. 95% of our food is prepared and cooked freshly, some things are reheated as would be expected, such as chilli con carne and curry, which take over 3 hours to slow cook and can't be cooked to order, but the majority should taste fresh and tasty. We're sorry if you weren't satisfied with your meals. With regards to the halloween decorations, this is something we have done for over 20 years. We are a family run and family friendly pub, so we decorate in time for the children's school holidays, and also for the local story telling club which hosts a topical evening once a month. We appreciate these aren't to everyone's taste and this is why we only decorate one section of the pub (the whole of our "Smithy Bar" and the bar area in "The River bar" have no decorations). We do hope that you will visit us again and that your opinion on us being average can be improved.

Watermill Inn & Windermere Brewing Co

Reviewed By BTBinnorthumberland

I tried to book this hotel/pub for the previous night but it was full. My daughter and partner were booked in for two nights and I wanted to join them so booked a local b&b for one night but decided to stay another night, and now a room was available. I would normally stay in remote village pubs in the central or northern fells so the south Lakes near the fleshpots of Windermere was not what I would have chosen. When I first walked in just after lunch service I declared it my “vision of south Lakeland corporate tourist hell!” It was full of diners, smelled of food and was very busy. I was wrong and glad to admit it. I went back a while later to find delightful staff, a fabulous selection of doggy-themed beers brewed on the premises, and a comfortable lounge with a wood stove. I booked for the next night and the staff joined in my ruse to keep it a secret from my daughter. My allocated room was up two flights in the attic but that is good for my spaniel and my daughter was in the only other room on that landing so there were no outside movements to upscuttle the dog. The room was relatively small with a double and a single bed, but a good rate for a family room with a dog in a busy tourist area. The room is very modern but quirky. The bathroom is small but modern, the room was spotless. A very comfy double bed with plenty of storage. The telly was a reasonable size and had an adjustable mounting. However, I cracked my head five times on the beam on the side of the room as did my daughter, and her partner in theirs! I still have the lump days later. On first lifting the loo seat it came off in my hand and I had to fix it. On checkout when I reported it the staff discussed it and she said” oh yes, it’s always breaking! “ Well fix it then! The double glazing doesn’t quite keep out the noise of the busy trunk road but that wouldn’t bother guests from urban areas. It did me a bit. The pub is large with viewing windows to the brewery. There are stoves in both main bars but we had to ask for the one in the bar we were eating in to be lit because it was cold, supported by other guests. The answer was it smoked a lot when first lit. Then light it earlier then! There is adequate WiFi throughout. There is a good “pub grub” menu served quickly and with a smile, as is the beer. The food was, erm, pub grub. It is extremely dog friendly with the bar server giving treats to the dogs and there is a very quiet lane nearby to walk them. The location wouldn’t be to my choice; it’s just off a busy trunk road but only a couple of miles from Windermere, and there are bus services if one wanted to use that to get back from the fleshpots in an evening. It’s ideally situated for the south lakes and all its mass tourism fleshpots, but for me it was only 15 minutes to Ambleside and more importantly only 25 minutes to the real Valhalla of Great Langdale. My daughter, who has worked in the luxury hotel industry for 20 years, (now as a senior manager) declared herself delighted with this venue and that is praise indeed. I enjoyed my stay although the location and style wouldn’t be to my usual taste. The staff deserve particular praise as does the beer. Give it a try. Dear Sir, I remember you staying with us and recall your kind comments at the time of your visit. Many thanks for also following up on this with your great review. I'm pleased you quickly changed your opinion of our Inn, we try our hardest to appeal to a broad range of clientele and we feel we have many unique selling points which make us stand out from your average Lake District tourist trap. I've fed your comments back to the staff and the owners about the service you received, and our brewer is thrilled you enjoyed the beer. We're pleased to read that your daughter and partner enjoyed their stay and we all hope to welcome yourself and them back in the future.

The Eagle and Child Inn

The issue with the Eagle is that is the only pub in the village after the Hawkshead beer hall closes at 7pm. Now I am 6ft 1inch tall and am a polite chap but when a member of bar staff totally ignores you because a local walks in makes ,y blood boil. Another member of staff spilled used cutlery all over the table and onto me without even acknowledging that she had done it, then expected me to pick up the utensils from under the table.....shockingly bad service, food ok,beer average but very expensive!
