August is not a good month for restaurants in France and we were pleased to find this one open.A very good restaurant with well presented and good food. Seating outside would be preferred in the hot summer.

I must admit I was skeptical about the small number reviewers all giving an "Excellent" rating, specially when it comes to Vietnamese cuisine in a backwater town like Riom. My prejudices were reinforced when I saw the quaint but slightly run-down street where it is located and when I saw the tiny "hole-in-the-wall" place it appeared to be from the outside. Well, it is small, but every other preconceived idea I had of this place was wrong.
For a start, the decor is much more refined than the street and shopfront lead you to believe. The owner welcomes you graciously and from then on it's all good.
The food itself was unusual, or should I say atypical. When the nems arrived they looked slightly overcooked but they were excellent, probably the best I've ever had, and all hand rolled that afternoon by the owners. I watched as other diners had the same "over-cooked" nems. (They weren't over-cooked, just appeared that way, and not greasy at all). The mains were delightfully tasteful, not overly spicy, but full of flavour.
We knew we were onto something when all the other tables seemed to be locals coming in for their weekly fix.
I should have guessed there was something different about this restaurant as the prices are above what you'd expect to pay for Asian food in a small town. Still, it's worth every penny, and even if I was in Clermont-Ferrand, I'd make the trip out here for dinner.

We chose to have a celebratory lunch here earlier this week and were really pleased with the choice. Although a lovely round table had been set for us inside in the stylish dining-room, we asked if we could move to the outdoor Terrace area, where a table was promptly laid for us.
The menu choice was excellent, ranging from 29 euros for a basic no-options meal , up through 39 and 49 to 57 at the top end, offering a delicious range of dishes. The wine list was broad in quality as well as price, offering something for everyone.
Service from the owners was outstanding and sensitive, although one of the younger waiting staff was a bit clueless.
Unusually for France we were allowed to carry on sitting and eating from 1pm, when we arrived, until nearly 5pm. We paid 60 euros/head for the 39 euro menu plus two bottles of wine, 6 of water, aperitifs and coffee: excellent value overall.
To be recommended. NB Not in the centre of Riom, so you need a car.

You wouldn't think it is a chain restaurant, it looks quite unique and original. Also the menu is packed with local expressions of dishes I hardly ever heard before like Pounti, Truffade, etc. The theme of the restaurant is the mountainous region of Auvergne with its typical dishes, plus their versions of pizzas and hamburgers. They are excellently prepared, come in "mountainous" quantities and are moderately priced. If you are not really very hungry, one main dish will do absolutely, skip the starters and desserts.
Staff was very friendly and attentive. I had been here before for dinner and it was packed. This time I stopped for lunch and we were just a few diners. Great place!

This meal was one of the best meals I have had in a restaurant in France.
Very fortunate to be taken here by a local friend, and manager of a chamber d'hôte.
The service and food was superb, and at a very inexpensive price relative to other meals I have eaten in France.
The only negative was the ambience: a few soft furnishings and a few word of art on the wall would benefit this.

Just passing through Riom on way to Calais after a day of very wet travel from Spain.
Typical non French; looking for food at 6pm ! Nothing much open !
The lady owner of this very chic and chaotically elegant restaurant tried to explain to us in French ; she was either just closing after lunchtime opening or it was very early for evening meal. Either way she was very happy to accommodate us.
As we were here only customers and she was on her own we felt very privileged and a bit like home from home .
The food was typical French cuisine and without being over the top 'French cooking' it was beautifully prepared and presented.
All at a very reasonable price.
Well worth popping in for a pleasant way to get out of the rain ( or any other time !)
Jk
