Petrovsky

Reviewed By AGuyFromHawaii - Honolulu, Hawaii

I actually visited this restaurant back in September 2010, but I didn't review it then. Hopefully, the restaurant is the same. Petrovsky offers traditional Karelian fare in a setting reminiscent of Peter the Great. There is even a authentic bearskin hanging on the wall. The food, while simply prepared, is evocative of a bygone era. Game meats (elk, deer, etc) are available and are served with berries harvested from the nearby Forests. All in all, I enjoyed myself very much sharing the meal with my Russian hosts.

Karelskaya Gornica

Lured by the promise of the first Karelian restaurant complete with costumed waitresses we went for dinner at Karelskaya Gornitsa. On the plus side, it was only across the road, from Hotel Severnaya where we were staying. It looked quite cute and there were vegetarian options always a plus. Also some interesting tinctures - Forest Charms which was a bit medicinal but packed a punch and cloudberry liqueur made from a fruit like an orange raspberry which was a bit sweet. On the downside, it was quite expensive by far and definitely the least tasty of the meals we ate during our 29 day first visit to Russia.

Place is located on the lake shore close to ferry terminal and offers nice views to the water. Very nice interior but irritating waiters. Food very average in taste and preparation but to be honest seems to be fresh. I think that it is one of the bests in the city anyway.

If you are looking for a place to chill out, have a few beers, eat pizza (they have large menu on "real" main courses and other food too) and maybe hear some live music, go to Kivach! Most of the staff members speak english and can give tips, if you are looking for clubs or other places with live music. Really nice staff, made us feel welcomed! Nice (even cheap) price level compared to Finland for example.

This restaurant is located within the SPA Hotel Karelia, and about the best part of our stay at the hotel. The restaurant is huge, with tall glass windows through which we could see the beautiful natural surroundings and bathe in the natural light coming through.
The restaurant menu includes both traditional Karelia cuisine and international dishes We ate a few times here, everything was delicious and we could taste the freshness of the ingredients.
Service was also friendly and prompt. We give this restaurant a 5 out of 5.

The welocome was just perfect, not over-done, not artificial.
Waiting time was ok, even a little upselling with the nice and
cheap Garlic bread. Watch out, it is deepfried. So if you eat all
three of them you might not need a main course anymore.
But although very fatty (like many russian stuff) it is extremly
delicious!!
Main course was lamb kebap. First I thought the portion was
a bit too small, but then think again, it is a main course for about RUB300.
Beer choice not perfect (Holsten and Baltika), but alright: one Russian, one foreign.
Cosy athmosphere. Loads of wook interieur. Older crowd, but I really enjoyed
my stay. Felt very welcome.
Thanks!

First timers in Russia, we felt a little nervous venturing out of the big cities. We're spending three days in Petrozavodsk and this is our first night here. Food is fantastic, service is quick, and prices are far below those of Moscow and St Petersburg. Hip, modern, warm atmosphere. Love it!

Cafe Petrozavodsk

Reviewed By Michael B

I visited Café Petrozavodsk with my friend in June 2017 for lunch. We had good time and enjoyed some appetizers, traditional soup, and a meat dish with cold vodka. This is by no stretch of imagination a high-end restaurant. One has to pick up food from a counter, put on a tray, and then pay. Sort of like cafeteria kind of thing. By the food is very decent, prices are low, and vodka is cold. What else do you need?
