We went to Nova Scotia to celebrate our parents 60th Wedding Anniversary and they had booked dinner Reservations at this Inn. Wow! We were amazingly surprised by the quality of the food. My husband and I had just returned from France for our 10th Wedding Anniversary the week before and of course we were amazed by all the food we ate there, especially in Paris. However, I must admit that the food at the Amherst Shore Country Inn was just as amazing as in Paris. Prepared with all fresh ingredients and full of flavour. If you are in the area, this truly is a place that must be experienced at least once. If I lived in the area, I think I would be there weekly.

My family orders from Szeto's Wok as our "first choice" for Chinese food! The food is always good quality and delicious, and prices are good. I'd advise calling in your order early, because they book up quickly, especially on weekends!

A&W Restaurant

Reviewed By Hooked_on_travel77 - Mts of western NC

We just happened to need lunch in this area both times during our trip to Cape Breton and the rest of Nova Scotia. Both visits we ordered the Uncle burgers with onion rings and mugs of root beer. While the atmosphere inside is typical of most chains, the food is excellent. We can't get decent onion rings in the US at fast food chains. It's all horrible! Here the onion rings are real onions and the taste is very good. The hamburgers are top notch and what a treat to get a mug of delicious root beer. The staff was very friendly and they kept the place clean. An added delight for us was the field of lupins right next to the parking lot. What a nice setting.

While driving through Amherst, we saw Duncan's and decided to have lunch. The pub is cozy and comfortable. I ordered a Haddock "Burger" which was delicious and my husband had a bowl of Seafood Chowder that he thoroughly enjoyed. Accompanied by a craft beer, we had a great meal Our server, Darlene, was friendly, efficient and there when we needed her.

Riverside Restaurant

Family Dining

Reviewed By Citallwic - Columbia, South Carolina

The Riverside is situated at a highway intersection that has a “middle of nowhere” look. This cozy restaurant accordingly functions like an oasis – a gathering spot for locals and an eatery for tourists vacationing nearby or just taking the back roads like CJ and I were. It just happened to be lunchtime when we came upon the Riverside. The Riverside is clean, has a friendly vibe, and offers better food and service than you might expect from a restaurant that has no close competitors. The folks we met there were chatty too, so we got lots of useful information and learned a good deal about local interests and lifestyles. We lingered over lunch and enjoyed the experience.
The Riverside shifts to a restricted schedule during the off season. If in doubt, call ahead for opening hours.

902-660-3090 - must add this to the list, a choice for people who do not want fast food nor pub food nor ok chinese. Huge surprise to find this delightful restaurant in this town. Lovely watercolors by local artist, guitar player - excellent food - went back twice in 24 hours - supper was beautiful haddock, rice and veg $12. Went back for lunch - yummy panini $8 , chowder $6 and salads $8. Very reasonable

Dinner with family and friends. Service was attentive and server was knowledgeable about the menu. An excellent menu, and the three of us made different selections, all of which were excellent.
Stick to the small salad unless you are really hungry, as it is good size, and the full salad is served on a dinner plate!
I had the spicy spaghetti & meatballs, even though I don't care for spicy foods. It was delicious. My wife had a spicier dish, which she totally enjoyed, and our friend had the pork medallions. Roast potatoes looked delicious.
I had my favourite - apple crisp - served cold with whipped cream. I am sure they would have heated it if I had thought to ask. The chocolate dessert was a large portion, and excellent. Coconut cake did not receive rave reviews.
A limited but adequate selection of drinks, with a pleasant ambiance. Prices are reasonable.
I don't give many 5-star reviews, but this one earned it.

Although we were given an opinion that this restaurant was not enjoyable, we found it to be quite the opposite. There was a good variety of menu items all at a reasonable price. Service was very good and we weren't rushed. The hot chicken Sandwich was loaded with carved meat and covered in a tasty gravy.

Wife and I were passing through and looking for breakfast, and this proved a wonderful find. We also enjoyed coming back to downtown Amherst after 50 years. Excellent coffee, eggs and bacon (pleased my very picky wife!), fresh breads. One of the best breakfasts we had on our Maritimes adventure. Friendly, efficient service. Recommended.

Tim Hortons

Reviewed By Sherman S - Humboldt County, CA

This Tim Hortons is well situated in downtown Amherst, just a short walk from all central shopping. If you've never been to one before, this is your basic self-serve coffee shop, not a Sandwich shop; think of it as Starbucks North. You don't go there for a meal like a burger & fries. Instead, it has the typical Tim Hortons' menu you find anywhere, especially throughout Canada: baked goods, bagels, breakfast sandwiches, soup, seasonal specials, and of course, Tim Hortons coffee; all reasonably priced. It's not on the large size, but we've always been able to find a table. In summary, if you're looking for coffee and light fare, you can't go wrong.
By the way, if you're looking for home-made food (mostly organic I think), there is the Art Of Eating Deli at the back of/behind the Mannaseh local food store a couple of blocks away at 85 Victoria Street. It's open for breakfast until late afternoon but not dinner. Expect to pay more, but everything is wholesome and made from scratch. And yes, they do have the usual array of espresso drinks, something Hortons lacks.

Woo's Kitchen

Reviewed By Paula W - Truro, Canada

Visited here on a Saturday afternoon. Service was fast, and food excellent as usual. Servings are large so bring a big appetite! Two had #4 with egg roll, chicken balls, chow mien and rice, while I had #1 with egg roll, chicken balls and rice. Good flavours and hot. Floors could be kept cleaner, but no big concern on cleanliness.
