Where to Eat in Aigues-Mortes: The Best Restaurants and Bars

January 14, 2018 Janean Rudisill

"Aigues-Mortes" translates to "dead waters," but the salt marshes surrounding this medieval city actually have given this town one of its chief industries: sea-salt production. (Bring some home for epicurean friends.) Fortified into a Mediterranean port in the 12th century, Aigues-Mortes’ massive walls survive—walk along them for great views.

We chose from the formule menu and between us could not eat all that we were brought. The food was beautifully cooked, tasty and varied in its flavours. The mixed grill was very well cooked, the meat succulent and the potatoes tasty. The couscous with lamb and sausage skewers was of huge volume and again beautifully cooked. The atmosphere was very pleasant and the waiters (and owner) prompt and attentive. The formule system means you can eat very good food here at a reasonable price. We guess that the food here may be of better standard than that in the square just fifty metres away, which Is packed with many tables. Go here for more individual attention.

We choose this restaurant after walking round most of Aigues-Mortes and reviewing menus.......... and we weren't disappointed. Excellent service and the price of the 'plat de jour' menu was 16 euros. This included a starter - mine was oeufs cocettes and it was delicious and piping hot - mains and dessert. Good sized portions for the starter - often on a 'plat de jour' menu the portions can be a bit stingy! The mains - my husband cooked his meat on a stone and I had the rouget - were delicious. The food was well presented and was flavoured well. The restaurant does not do wine by the pichet, so the wine is perhaps a little more expensive than some places. We paid 16 euros for a half bottle of red - again, very drinkable. All in all, the whole experience was very pleasant - good food and good service - which in a busy tourist town in August is great to find. We will be going back on our next visit to Aigues-Mortes.

We visited this restaurant twice on our recent trip to the South of France and found it one of the best in Aigues-Mortes along with Aqueste-Ko and Boem. The menu is diverse with some unusual dishes and some Spanish themes and the food is absolutely excellent, with generous portion sizes. The service is professional and friendly with the proprietor doubling up as head waiter. The Côte de Toro which is effectively a Côte de Boeuf with bull steak is without doubt one of the best steaks I have had anywhere in the world and it was cooked to perfection. The peppercorn sauce that came alongside the steak and burgers was absolutely sublime and tasted amazing with both the meat and very well cooked chips. Overall the restaurant is one of my top three in Aigues-Mortes along with the other two above and I would highly recommend a visit. Thank you to the owner for two lovely evenings which helped make our holiday special.

If you enjoy Indian food, ask for him to add some spices. Otherwise, the preparation is not hot. The food is good and the prices are correct.

Small modern style restaurant. Friendly young team overlooked by a hard working young chef. No classic anything here. Contemporary, american style atmosphere and presentation of food. Lots of emphasis on fresh products. Quality/price is excellent, especially for lunch. Can be a bit noisy due to its small size and its fan club. Lots of regular customers. No outside Terrace. Clever combination of French and Asian cooking. Service is as it should be. Many thanks and we look forward to another visit.

It's difficult to say which kind of food is best. All I can say is that the dishes are very fresh and extremely nicely prepared (cooked and presented). Just let you guide by the charming waiting personnel and you'll be ok.
On Monday evenings in July and August there is a special terrasse where you can taste exquisie tapas in a surrounding of excellent music (D.J.).
Reservations are of course a must! (for both, restaurant and tapas), But you will choose either/or either tapas or the restaurant for fine dining.

We stumbled upon this unassuming tapas restaurant late in the evening, (other nearby restaurants refused us service as they were closing). La Bodega welcomed us with open arms.
The service was first class, the tapas were the best we've experienced outside of Spain, (the Patatas Bravas are a standout), and the prices make this great value!

Ate lunch there on a sleepy, hot summer day.
Restaurant mostly limits itself to roast chicken and hamburgers, with a few other things.
Pluses: good food, prepared with care. Owner is pleasant and speaks English.
Minuses: hamburger meat was undercooked. You may want to specify "à point" or even "bien cuit". Food took too long to arrive, which was surprising since the place wasn't busy at all.
Overall still a good option in Aigues-Mortes.

Bar Pub le Tac-Tac

Reviewed By Hawthorn37 - Derby, United Kingdom

We ended up coming to this place several times during our stay in Aigues-Mortes. It is completely different to the stereo typical French bar - more of a pub. The range of drinks on offer is staggering. The owner reckoned he had 3,500 different brands but couldn't count the bottles. Each winter he "invests" in more brands of spirits, wines and beers, with many beers from Belgium. There are more whiskey brands here than many bars in Glasgow or Edinburgh! Cocktails are also popular here.
The atmosphere is very cool, laid back, and friendly. The owner speaks English (we discovered on the 2nd night), but we did try and chat in French as much as possible. The music is great - for us - with British prog rock classics most of the time, such as Pink Floyd.
There are eats to be had (cold meats etc), and also bar snacks.
Very popular with locals and tourists, and all nationalities. A 'must do' for your visit to Aigues-Mortes.

Just a few meters from the main centre square in delightful historic Aigues-Mortes, you'll find a cozy little courtyard with plants and iron furniture: Classic and authentic.
The kitchen offers three salads for dinner; our company of five had three salads, and two magret de canards, along with a bottle of rosè (take the Saint Christoff!) and a few bottles of water plus the obligatory two espressos. Price about 150€.
We had fun and enjoyed the atmosphere; the waiter was relaxed and attentive, and the food was okay.
