What to do and see in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin (WI): The Best Concerts & Shows

September 21, 2021 Mikaela Didonna

Shaped by the currents and curves of the Wisconsin River, Wisconsin Dells has been a favorite family vacation destination for more than 150 years. An explosion of indoor water parks has turned the Dells from a summer hot spot to a year-round destination. Kids will enjoy the seemingly endless supply of fun and games, from go-karts to miniature golf, sideshows to thrill rides. If the weather's right, you can take a Duck tour of land and water, and top it all off with a heaping helping of the local fudge.

Once again the Rick Wilcox Magic Show bamboozled me. But first, a few comments about the “Business” side of “Show Business.” Besides being skilled artists, most magicians are small business owners. The Small Business Administration says 50% of all new small businesses fold within the first year. Further, 90% fold within five years. Rick Wilcox is now in his 21st year at his Wisconsin Dells theatre. His enduring power alone is great testimony to the high caliber of his family magic show. He couldn’t sustain year after year without top-flite programming. Second, some comments about the “Show” side of “Show Business.” Plan to arrive early because 15 minutes or so before showtime, on-screen instructions lead the audience through a playful routine of “warm-up” experiences that culminate with everyone joyfully singing “Sweet Caroline.” The built-up anticipation is climaxed with the instant production of a fire engine red Lamborghini; Rick climbs out of the car and enters to start the show. Three types of magic exist: big stage illusions, stand-up magic performed in front of the curtains, and intimate close-up magic. Working closer together than husband and wife deeply in love after decades of marriage (oh, wait, they are), Rick and Susan Wilcox present a strategic mix of all three magic categories. Their stage illusions include the mind-blowing, stage-filling production of a helicopter and the classic levitation of Susan who not only floats to the stage but Rick also floats up to join her. In front of the curtains, Rick acknowledges Susan’s birthday. Since he can’t take her to Arizona for a vacation, he decides to bring Arizona to her and defies the laws of physics by presenting her with a saguaro cactus that he amazingly places inside a huge balloon that doesn’t break. For close-up magic, a TV camera projects an on-screen view as four coins move to various locations on a table top before exploding to 16 coins in a magic effect his father taught Rick years ago. You may see a few eyes dripping tears as the full story is told. Bottom line: the Rick and Susan Wilcox (including her 15 costume changes) Magic Show is absolutely terrific and it is easy to see why it is rated the number one family show in the Dells.

We visited the ski show on Sunday, July 15, 2018. We purchased our tickets through Passport to Savings. When we bought the tickets, we purchased reserved seat tickets and were given our reserved seat assignments at that time. The show is easy to find, like everything in Wisconsin Dells, and was ready to accommodate a crowd. We chose the 8:30 show and arrived about 8:00. There was plenty of free parking with many parking lot attendants pointing the way. It was quite a walk down the hill to the show, but golf carts would help those with mobility issues. Our seats were in the middle of row 11, Section D, which were excellent – right in the middle of the action. Honestly I don’t think there were any bad seats. We might have chosen a different seat if we hadn’t reserved seats, only because the reserved seat section seemed more crowded than the others. Also, it didn’t matter to us, but there was a cover over some of the other seats which would have helped if it were sunny or raining. All of the seats – reserved and unreserved - had backs. Ours were comfortable – all looked fine. We loved the history and tradition behind the water show. We found out on the trolley tour that there was no police officer in Wisconsin Dells until the 50’s when Tommy Bartlett asked the city to hire a constable to direct traffic in and out of the show. The first half of the show is a classic water show with skiers, fast boats, jet skis, a hang glider, a man on a water jet pack (so cool!), and a funny clown. We all loved it! The second half is on stage – not on the water – and was more like circus acts or America’s Got Talent acts. We saw father and son unicyclists/comedians, mother and son sky wheel walkers, and a family of acrobats. My guess is that the acts would change, but I could be wrong. The show ended with a patriotic water fountain show in appreciation of our military personnel and first responders. We were glad we had chosen a night show as there were several lighting effects we would have missed in the daytime. Also, it was cooler at night. There were vendors throughout the stadium selling “SUGAR ON A STICK!” (cotton candy), soft drinks, popcorn, beer, and light-up toys. They were funny, and it lent an old-fashioned feel to the event. We thoroughly enjoyed the Tommy Bartlett Show and would declare it a “must-do” for visitors of all ages.

Crystal Grand Music Theater

We love live music! Our intimate seating for 2000 allows you to get up close and personal with the stars you love. Due to the setup of our theatre, with seats angling up as you go back and a fantastic mezzanine section, you're set up to see an incredible show no matter where you are. There's not a bad seat in this house! Our spectacular architecture will wow you as you walk in, with beautiful high ceilings and a gorgeous grand staircase that leads you to the mezzanine level of our beloved establishment. The architecture is amazing, but it's the legendary talent on stage and the incredible service from our dedicated staff that will make this theatre your new favorite Wisconsin Dells hotspot. Acts include comics, country stars, oldies favorites, and rock musicians. We've had many legends appear on our stage including REO Speedwagon, Sara Evans, Vince Gill, and Pat Benatar. Built in 1994, The Crystal Grand has become a legendary part of the Dells that is held close to the hearts of not only the owners and employees, but also the people who have been attending our concerts since day one. And for them we are truly grateful.

The Crystal Grand is our favorite venue! It's large enough to attract big acts like Styx and Huey Lewis, but small enough so that no one feels too far from the stage. There isn't a bad seat in the house, except the one you don't buy! My only suggestion is to get there about an hour before the concert, as the smallish lobby gets crowded fast, as do the rest rooms. The helpful staff always does their best to get the cars out of the parking lot as quickly as possible, and you won't wait nearly as long as you will at larger places.

The was the Best performance I have seen at the Palace. Been coming here since it opened - at least one or two venues per year. The high energy, the stage props, the costumes, the singing, the performers all top notch! Not to mention the music! George, our waiter, was attentive, efficient, and provided excellent service. This was the first time an alternate menu dinner was offered since we have been coming here. The prices seemed reasonable. We stayed with the general dinner. Very well done. Found it interesting the tables on the floor were served cake for their dessert while the tiers had sorbet. We ordered the strawberry cheese cake too. Creamy and delicious with fresh strawberries and real whipped cream. Definitely worth the ticket price. I should mention the first time we sat at the tables on the floor. Since then we have purchased tables on the tiers. I suggest the tiers. You get a better view. Glad to see this dinner theater is doing so well...

We had a large group. We enjoyed both shows. There was excitement as we learned what to expect, then started the adventure. It is a theatre, similar to Soaring at Epcot Center. There is a short film describing what the film would show us. The seats are mobile, so you strap yourself in and let the theater do the rest. The seats lean forward and back and side to side. The screen reaches all the way around, so you feel like you are floating around different national parks, or on a train. They provide some breeze, a mist of water, or scents, just to help you feel like you are really there.
