What to do and see in Windermere, England: The Best Free Things to do

July 14, 2021 Myesha Cogley

This popular resort town is located just a mile from Windermere Lake, the largest lake in Europe and alleged home of more than one peculiar sea creature. If we've scared you out of skiing, boating and fishing in Windermere Lake, there's always horseback riding and golf. Or you can explore the lake from the safety of a ferryboat, which regularly takes passengers from Hawkshead to Bownes.

Absolutely love this walk! It's a must for people who aren't as athletic and still want to experience the beauty and the views of the lakes, it's just a short walk from windermere and only takes you about 30 minutes to get the top! Which didn't take me long! absolutely breath taking views and a lovely pub just a short walk from it ????

Thuline Studio - Gallery

The gallery is now open. Thuline is a professional artist specialising in animal portraits, mainly farm animals and pet portrait commissions. In her studio-gallery she sells originals, prints and gifts with her animals on (cushions, aprons, coasters….). She runs small workshops, up to 6 people. These can be for individuals, families, businesses, friends... On location, she can work with bigger groups. These can be organised on very short notice. Or you can come and watch her paint. Thuline does demonstrations too. Thuline also exhibits originals and limited edition prints all over the UK and Ireland. There is a permanent showcase of her work in the Jumbleroom, Grasmere. “I observe animals, their shapes, gestures and mannerisms and in developing my ideas, I take them quite often out of their context. I like using bold colours.” Thuline takes online orders too.

This is an update of my earlier review, which I've left in its entirety below. Having done an 'animal' workshop (see below), and having loved it, I decided to do an online (due to Covid) day with Thuline doing a landscape course. Apart from the usual Zoom glitches, it was fantastic. I'm really pleased with the result so far and had a great day. Thuline has even given me some advice as to how to make it even better - I'm just having a breather before I start!

The shop is well known. All the staff are friendly and well informed about the location of items as well as the benefits of the goods. It is worth a visit to the restaurant as you get proper leaf tea seved with a straner and is lovely.

A great path that can allow you to include Grasmere water as a circular route about 3 miles. Extending the walk can include Loughrigg terrace, Rydal caves and many other walking routes. Certainly not to be missed. Great place for children to enjoy stone skimming and walking along the small pebbley beach Don't forget if heading towards Ambleside or coming from look out for the Rydal Stepping stones which are great fun for ALL

High Street

Once a Roman road linking some of England’s major forts, visitors can take scenic hiking trips along the route to soak up the scenic beauty and history of England’s Lake District.

We are staying in a holiday let just off the front street and it’s so good to have all of the facilities within a stones throw. There’s a booths supermarket for a ‘proper shop’ and a cooperative and Sainsbury’s for convenience items. The high street itself has plenty of eateries and shops to browse and a few art galleries. Really enjoyed our stay here. Will be back.

A retirement gift was bought from here which led us to visit and hopefully purchase another by the same artist (Heather Stephenson) . We actually came away with an original by Jeff Sudders which will have pride of place in our lounge. Staff very helpful and interested to talk about the works they are selling. Very covid safe too. Will Return without a doubt!
