Westminster is a city in northern Orange County, California. It is known for a large number of Vietnamese refugees who immigrated to the city during the 1980s, settling largely in the area now officially named Little Saigon, and the city is unofficially known as the "capital" of overseas Vietnamese with 36,058 Vietnamese Americans and at 40.2% (2010), the highest municipal prevalence of Vietnamese Americans.

During a recent trip to "Little Saigon," had the opportunity to visit the Vietnam War Memorial. As a former soldier, who spend time serving in South Vietnam, this was a very difficult memorial to visit. During my years in Vietnam, I lost many good friends, both Vietnamese and American servicemen and women. Those deaths still haunts me to this day. The Vietnam War Memorial in "Little Saigon," Westminster, California was dedicate on April 27, 2003 at Sid Goldstein Freedom Park. It features two bronze 15 foot high statues of soldiers, (a South Vietnamese and an American soldier) standing together atop a black marble base arranged in a semi circle. The flags of the United States of America and the Republic of South Vietnam are flying behind the soldiers. In the center is an "eternal flame'' bronze urn surrounded by a moat and iron fence. There are no name inscriptions on the memorial. This memorial pays respect to those 58,178 American and 300,000+ Vietnamese men and women who fought and died during the 1961 - 1975 Vietnam War. Around the circular memorial, one will find a park with shade trees, rose bushes, park benches, a playground for children, and restrooms. A quiet place to reflect on friends loss during the war. For me this visit to the Vietnamese War Memorial is step towards healing the wounds of war. Recommend that everyone should visit this memorial and spend a few moments honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice during the War.

"Little Saigon" in Orange County, California is home to the largest concentration of Vietnamese outside of Vietnam. It is the home of 189,000+ Vietnamese Americans reside. The community originally started in Westminster, and over the years spread to Garden Grove. Little Saigon is located approximately 45 miles (72 km) south of Los Angeles, California. "Little Saigon" is a spread-out community containing a mixture of Vietnamese and Chinese-Vietnamese businesses. It is estimated that over 4000+ different businesses exits in the complex which encompasses over 3 square mile. The main street through "Little Saigon" is Bolsa Avenue (home of the Phước Lộc Thọ (Asian Garden Mall) and Little Saigon Plaza). Bolsa Avenue runs through Westminster and is dotted with shopping centers and strip malls. The borders of Little Saigon is Trask Avenue and West McFadden Avenue on the north and south and Euclid Street and Magnolia Street on the east and west. About three-quarters of the population in this area are Vietnamese. Phở Restaurants that serve Vietnamese noodle soup are found everywhere. There are approximately 280 restaurants in the Little Saigon complex (122 in Westminster and 158 in Garden Grove) that cater to Vietnamese dishes. Each is unique. In addition, there are quite a number of Vietnamese supermarkets, small Vietnamese delis and bakeries (Van's Bakery and 85C Bakery Cafe are outstanding) specializing in French style coffee and baguette sandwiches (Bánh mì gà nướng (grilled chicken sandwiches). Restaurants serving Chinese cuisines can be found scattered throughout the community. The Vietnamese ABC Siêu Supermarket is the predominate grocery store in the area. If you want it, they will most likely have it. Excellent selection of exotic Asian fruits and vegetables. Store is very large and very congested with shoppers. A Plethora of Vietnamese doctors, dentists, lawyers, accountants offices etc. can be found in the area. Be advise that traffic is very heavy and parking can be a major headache. For my "Little Saigon" brings back memories of days spent in Saigon back in the early 1970's. If you are interested in trying a different cruise and seeing a unique culture, recommend a visit to Little Saigon.

While on a grocery shopping expedition to Little Saigon, we had the opportunity to visit the Phước Lộc Thọ (Asian Garden) Shopping Mall in Westminster, California. Large 2 story shopping mall with 217 stores located throughout the mall. All shops are Vietnamese owned and operated and one will find jewelry shops, clothing stores, restaurants, shoe stores, cosmetic shops, several banks, and even a travel agency. Located on the first floor (at the front of the mall) is a large Vietnamese food court with a plethora of restaurants dispensing a wide range of outstanding Vietnamese dishes. Pho, Mi, Spring Rolls are just a few examples of the excellent food items that are available. If you like Banh Mi Sandwiches, stop by Lees Sandwiches and indulge yourself with a Bahn Mi Gai (fresh chicken sandwich). Outstanding!. Mall has a large parking lot ,however parking can be difficult on weekends. Be patient and eventually you will find a place to park. English is the predominate language spoken in most shops, however, if you happen to speak Vietnamese that is a major plus at this mall. We spent three hours wandering around, looking at the different items on sale and talking to the venders. An excellent opportunity to experience a different culture. For me it brought back memories of Vietnam, that I remember from the 1970's. This is a must visit location if you are in the area. Strongly recommend stopping by and enjoy a new experience.

Occupying nearly 150 acres, Westminster Memorial Park and Mortuary brings the uplifting and pastoral beauty of the countryside into the heart of Orange County. We have an estimated 1,300 trees – probably more trees per acre than other cemetery or memorial parks in the area – along with statuary, fountains, a stream, waterfall, and a lake. We have an on-site crematory and florist, so all of your needs can be provided for in one location. Other highlights of our award-winning park include the Mausoleum of Eternal Light, which boasts two interior streams and a large fountain along with three large skylights that give the mausoleum its name. The large pagoda and tiered private family estates in our Garden of Peaceful Eternity are well-known and loved by local residents. This garden has quadrupled in size since it was first developed in 1996, due to the great demand by the community. Our beautiful main chapel, easily seen from Beach Boulevard, is a landmark in central Orange County, and is often the setting for various community events, such as the Celebration of Life ceremony and Escape School® programs for children.
