What to do and see in Uyuni, Bolivia: The Best Places and Tips

December 21, 2017 Frederic Celentano

Most travelers come to Uyuni to visit some of the world’s most unusual terrain—the Salar de Uyuni. This is the world’s largest salt flat, and you’ll want to bring a camera for surreal photos of salt-encrusted ground, geysers, and multicolored lakes.

We were traveling around the bolivian altiplanic for three days. We bought a private tour in Denomades.com (Salar de Uyuni superior). Our guide was Super Mario (Luis). He took my two frieds and I into amazing places: ask Denomades for him to be your guide. On the third day we arrive to the Salar de Uyuni, a place that I don't have words to describe. Just go!

Truly amazing place to come to get a real close up look at the flamingos around. The smell by the water is pretty awful but that's the price you pay for it's beauty. Highly recommended.

Are these the world's highest altitude geisers. No claim made by the guide but you will need to preare yourself for the journey here.
Bolivia is harnessing the power of the geisers to provide electric power by using turbines powered by the geisers.
A must see

Our lodging at the base of Tunupa provided direct and amazing views of the extinct volcano. I was mesmerized by the continually shifting colours on the face, cream, rust, green, white, blue everything in the spectrum. Directly off the Salar De Uyuni in the Altoplano and standing over 17,000 feet, it would have been great to give it a hike if we had more time. A wonderful geological experience in Bolivia if you can get there!

The day we visited the white lagoon was blue. Our guide was shocked as we drove up and she realized the white had disappeared. No one present was sure what caused the color change and no one was sure if it is temporary or not. This lagoon is adjacent to and upstream from the Laguna Verde so in fact was incidental to our trip and I was not really disappointed. If your out there stop by and have a look but I would not make it the raison d'etre

Aguas Termales de Polques

Reviewed By rapha_y_nici - Canton of Zurich, Switzerland

Came here during our 3d2n tour with Salty desert and had luck to be accommodated only approx 300m from this hot pool and therefore could enjoy a bath including priceless nightsky in the evening. Only about 3 cars came here for the evening, therefore only a few people in the pool and we could stay under the milkyway for three hours! It was too good to be true! But, we had luck because we subscribed first for the tour with Salty desert and therefore we could sleep in this hostel next to the pools. Mostly all other tours arrive here in the next morning.
This sky was one of the best we could see during our travels, it's based on approx 4300m. Outside it was very cold, so to get out of the pool was a little challenge, but after some time in the very comfortable pool we were heated up enough! The pool had exactely the perfect temperature to feel comfortable! At that point were the water flows in it's almost hot and in the other part of the pool (right half if you enter it) is still warm enough but no too hot!
We are very thankful for this unforgettable experience, muchas Gracias Salty Desert!!
