One of the best hike I have ever done in my life, from Haputale town we hike through the Black Forest jungle, it was great adventure. It took almost 3 hours to reach the view point. We have able to see some wild life animals, birds, small mammals, lizards etc. we get down from the thotalagala side which is other side of the mountains to see lake Richmond. Highly recommend to do this hike if your in Haputale. Same hike you can visit the ravana cave too.

Mapakada Wewa is an amazingly beautiful lake. Mapakada Lake is located in Mahiyanganaya, before you head to Mahiyanganaya. When you driving along the adjacent road you can enjoy the magnificence of the still waters, framed by trees and with tall mountains beyond. Around the Mapakada lake area is a photographer's and artist's paradise with so many shades of greens and browns blending into a very peaceful and tranquil landscape. If you stay at Mapakada Village hotel, early morning and early evening boat trips are arranged by the management. This area is Ideal to watch birds, beautiful environment etc. You see plenty of birds while there.

Sorabora Lake

A massive reservoir built by a giant in king dutugamanu era. It’s a very beautiful place and this has become a major tourist attraction in Mahiyanganaya. There are many shops on the way and you can have a boat ride also if interested. Boat ride cost us 1500 rupees. There are enough parking spaces. You have to walk a small distance from the parking to the reservoir. This is the only reservoir on Sri Lanka with a stone sluice gate. On to a side there’s a nice hanging bridge nd don’t forget to visit there as well. Go there early morning or evening.

Thangamale Bird Sanctuary

Reviewed By nimmigunase - Colombo, Sri Lanka

This is a picturesque walk starting from near the Adisham monastery all the way along the ridge of mountain to Idalgashinna. We started the walk at about 9 am (even earlier would have been better) and it was a leisurely 3 hour and 6 km walk that took us through a not-very-well marked trail sometimes obstructed by fallen branches and trees. Walking along the beaten track adds to the character of the trek. The early part of the walk was in shade and therefore cool and pleasant. We took a picnic breakfast with us and it fuelled us for the rest of the walk. The walk then takes one to more open land with some pine trees and suddenly one comes upon an incredible vista to the right. The entire uva valley stretches out in front of your gaze with manicured hills covered in lush tea bushes - with the Glennanore estate below, and the majestic hills of ova trimming the scene. Its a spectacular view, with the railway line just below the walk. The walk is on a mountain ridge with the Haldummulla valley to the left and the Uva basin to the right, so If one deviates slightly to the left at a point about three quarters of the way of the walk and turns left one can see the Haldumulla valley to the left as well. The last km or so is on the railway track and then one arrives at the Idalgashinna railway station. This small village is only accessible by train, except for estate trails which can take a tuk tuk to Bandarawela or Diytalawa, The village has a small community of people with a school and a few houses. We had lunch at the guest house Peak Rest, which we reserved by phone the previous day. Its a lovely house owned by Mrs Bala and she had made a fabulous Sri Lankan meal. It was a very important addition to a very nice day. After lunch we took the 2 pm train back to Diyatalawa. Its a definite must-do trek in Uva with views to behold.
