What to do and see in Utah, United States: The Best Horseback Riding Tours

November 29, 2021 Kandra Bartel

Welcome to “The Greatest Snow on Earth” – Utah’s paradise for all outdoor enthusiasts! As host of the 2002 Winter Olympics, Park City knows how to entertain winter fun seekers. Snowboarders and skiers head for miles of spectacular slopes with deep fluffy powder and breathtaking mountain views. The Olympic Park provides family-friendly ski programs, rides and shows. Alta, Sundance, Snowbird and Brighton are other popular destinations for cross country and Alpine skiers. Those alluring snowy slopes turn to rolling wildflower fields in the summer. Golfing, fishing, horseback riding and water sports replace chilly outdoor sports adventures. Corral the family, pack a picnic and catch one of the ski lifts for an afternoon of hiking or mountain biking along scenic trails. Head to Salt Lake City, where Temple Square hosts millions of visitors a year. Bryce Canyon and Arches National Park are famous for surreal landscapes from horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters to unusual rock formations and hundreds of natural sandstone arches. Closer to home, wander along the quaint main streets of mountain villages to browse, shop and enjoy lunch at an outdoor café. At the end of the day, head home for an outdoor barbecue and an evening of games. Home rentals blend privacy, space and comfort with the cost-saving advantage of eating some meals at home.

We took the three hour ride along Peek-a-boo Trail and thoroughly enjoyed it, finding it to be a wonderful and exciting way to get below the rim and appreciate the canyon and its one-of-a-kind rock formations. We made our reservations online approximately three months in advance, and we’re glad we did as we would have been disappointed to have missed it. I hadn’t been on a horse in years, or in this case a mule, nor had my husband, but we took right back to it. And the mules do all the work, allowing you to just ride and take in all the beauty. Our guide, as well as the two guides for the other groups riding at the same time as ours, was knowledgeable, friendly, and focused on our fun and safety. We also found the lady staffing the trail ride desk to be very personable and attentive to our needs, as we had originally booked a morning slot on one day, but because of weather ended up moving it to an afternoon slot on another day. We made the right decision on that and had perfect weather for our ride. This a great activity for couples, families, and friends. Don’t hesitate to do it.

We just had the most awesome morning snowmobiling through fresh powder! Our family of four, including two teens, loved every second of the adventure. Things to know: - They give you all you need: ski suits, boots, etc. We wore yoga pants or jeans and then put their snowsuits on top and were super cozy, although you can just wear your own ski gear. They have helmets and googles but i would bring your own and wear layers to stay warm. - We did it at 11 AM and the sun was out, it was a bit warmer and the scenery was stunning - We rented two machines and were able to switch off drivers at the meadow You take off up the hill through tress in a line and it's nice to absorb the scenery and get the hang of the machine. Then you get to a meadow were they set you loose and it is super fun. The guides are really nice and when we fell or got stuck they were there in no time flat helping out and saying that if you don't fall, you're not having enough fun. All in all, they were fantastic, super friendly and I would highly recommend doing this on a day you are taking a break off from skiing. They even dropped us off at our lunch spot after the trip at no charge - thanks guys!

Our 1.5 - 2 hour trail ride with Becky was amazing! My kids and I are relatively inexperienced riders, but she provided very thorough instructions and frequently checked in with us during the ride. The scenery was breathtaking, and the horses were wonderful. I would highly recommend Hell's Backbone Ranch and Trail to anyone looking for a fun way to see the beautiful scenery in this area.
