After taking a little uphill pathway surrounded by snow, we were rewarded with the beauty of this snow-covered shrine at the foothill of Mt. Daisen! I really recommend going in winter!

Mt. Daisen

Reviewed By geisi719 - Hong Kong, China

Most of the areas are shaded and it’s not very hot in late September. Bring a stick (or a pair) if possible as it’s quite tiring to go up for about two hours (and I chose the easier summer trail already!). It was a wonderful hike though it was quite foggy on the day I arrived the summit of Daisen. Highly recommend staying in a hostel (ryokan in Japanese) along the ryokan street after the hike. You may enjoy onsen to rejuvenate your body. The area is very quiet and relaxing. Enjoy the nature and Japanese culture!

A scenic road alongside the Sea of Japan where you find small islands, grottos, hidden beaches and cliffs. There are facilities as stairs, bathrooms, etc. I highly recommend taking the taxi tour from tourist office, next to the train station.

The Sand Museum

The Sand Museum in Tottori Sand Dunes is the only indoor museum exhibited sand sculpture specially. We exhibit the highest quality sand sculptures every year by the executive producer and the professional sculptor from all over the world.

Reviewed By Cierrann - Seattle, United States

This was definitely something new for me! Right next to the sand dunes, this museum puts up a new display every year. We were lucky enough to see the 2019 one, right after it opened. The sculptures are incredible. Just thinking about carving in sand, sent shivers of anxiety up and down my back. They have explanations, and the final product was mind blowing. Even more amazing (to the US mind), was the lack of barriers around the sand. I thought it was a mistake, but my guide said no. Japanese don't touch. There was a little sadness there, for me. As the Japanese welcome so many tourists, things are going to change. I found the Japanese like to have some things untouchable and unknowable - while my upbringing made me really want to touch one of those sculptures! (I didn't, of course.) The sculptures themselves are planned and done by an international team, which was also pretty cool.

We were expecting a nice flower park and were instead overwhelmed by this huge, amazing complex of gardens, two domed-areas, forest, water, and beautiful pathway areas. We could have used 2-3 hours to thoroughly visit. Of course there were flowers everywhere, in planters and hanging baskets on pathways, in the domes and other buildings, and seasonal ones growing in the ground. In addition, the layout of the park is well-done. A main covered wooden walkway circles the central area, with the Main Dome in the center and a Jungle Dome on the South side, and other buildings on the East and North sides of this circle (the Entrance building is at the West side). A pterodactyl topiary and stick dinosaur appear near the Entrance and visiting the Jungle Dome sure makes you feel like being in Jurassic Park.

Daisen-ji Temple

Oyama Temple reaches 1300 years after the mountain was opened. The main hall which was hit by the three-year and four-year fire of Showa was rebuilt in Showa 26. Even now, there are many treasures left, such as Yamauchi Temple Jukain, important cultural property Amidado and Tokusansonson, and as a temple of so-called 'Tandai', it is a famous place of so-called 'San-in'. Reverence as a temple where you can meet your ancestors.
