What to do and see in Tokyo, Kanto: The Best Scenic Railroads

March 17, 2022 Malia Yoakum

Tradition collides with pop culture in Tokyo, where you can reverently wander ancient temples before rocking out at a karaoke bar. Wake up before the sun to catch the lively fish auction at the Tsukiji Market, then refresh with a walk beneath the cherry blossom trees that line the Sumida River. Spend some time in the beautiful East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, then brush up on your Japanese history at the Edo-Tokyo Museum. Don’t forget to eat as much sushi, udon noodles, and wagashi (Japanese sweets) as your belly can handle.

One of my favorite experiences in Japan! The whole photoshoot is a lifetime memory. The hosts were very hospitable and I felt welcomed as a tourist in Tokyo. They explain the history of each armor set and then explain each item that was dressed on me. They take a lot of photos during the shoot and they all turned out awesome! I am very happy that I was able to do this during my trip. I hope they are doing well during these times of the COVID-19 and travel restrictions.

Tokyo boast number of fantastic contemporary architecture. However, some of you may feel that they haven't seen much of the traditional buildings in the city. One of the reason many of those traditional buildings aren't seen in the city was from the history of Edo (old Tokyo) . There's no building like the Nakagin Capsule Tower in the whole world, and sadly it's not clear how long is going to last. After years of admiring the building from the outside, I decided to discover the inside. I was so lucky that my guide Yuka was available for a visit on December 31st, it was a fantastic way for me to finish the strange year 2020. The history of the building is just fascinating, and listening to it while you inside make you understand a lot about the history of Tokyo and Japan itself. Architecturally and aesthetically, the building is just astonishing, so unique. I totally recommend the experience ... before it's too late. I keep my fingers crossed and hope that this magnificent piece of architecture gets the recognition it deserves because I truly believe Tokyo wouldn't be the same without it.

We chose Tokyo Bleisure Trip for a private tour of the live tuna auction at Toyosu Market followed by a food walk of the old Tsukiji Market. Takashi was a warm, friendly and informative guide. From timely prior communication to sharing restaurant/sightseeing recommendations afterwards, it was a pleasure interacting with him from start to finish. Takashi met us at our hotel and we promptly started our tour at 5 AM. We first headed to the new wholesale fish market, Toyosu Market, and viewed the auction from the upper observation deck. Takashi patiently explained the entire process and shared some interesting facts and figures about the auction. Being Christmas eve, we were lucky to witness the auction on one of the busiest days of the year, where thousands of tuna were up for sale. This was followed by an omasake sushi breakfast at the famous Daiwa restaurant. We ended the tour with a food walk of the old Tsukiji fish market, where we savoured local street snacks like daifuku, taiyaki, karage and tamogoyaki. Takashi even helped us purchase local spices and Japanese pottery. A great experience overall and we would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Tokyo! Tip: Plan at least one month in advance if you would like to view the auction from the lower observation deck. Make sure to reach on time, or the auction will get over within half an hour on the days with less catch.

We had excellent experience with Yoki on November 30th 2019 when we went to Nikko. First thing - Yoki is very organized. All trip was well planned and executed. He scheduled all public transport we were supposed to use and kept us on track. The selection of the lunch place he picked (Marple restaurant) was perfect. Food was delicious and the whole place was charming. Overall Nikko worth the entire day. So many things to see - breathtaking views, mountains, waterfall, ride on the rope way, Toshogu shrine (just stunning beauty), etc. It was our last day of Japan so i really enjoyed a good mix of beautiful nature scenes and historical places. Very recommended!
