What to do and see in The Ardennes, Wallonia: The Best Nature & Parks

October 11, 2021 Tynisha Seiler

A smorgasbord of flavors come from this lofty land in the hilly southeast of Belgium: game, wild boar, venison, smoked ham, the region's famous paté and world-renowned Trappist beers. Primarily located in Belgium, the Ardennes mountains also nudge into France and Luxembourg. Dense forests flank the steep hillsides, and market towns and villages perch on river banks. Spring and summer show this lush area at its best, but cross country skiing opportunities make a good case for winter visits.

Very nice walk in a quiet picturesque part of the Ourthe river valley. This walk is a combination of easy climbing with stretches along the Ourthe river.

We started the day with this nice tour around the hills. It is really clean, sign are clear and the cave are nice surprises. Strongly recommended with kids with the lamp of your mobile. Explore them. Nice bar in the middle of the way where you meet the kayakistes.

A really nice series of easy to ride old railway tracks in the picturesque Ardennes. These take you through the historic villages such as Stavelot and Francorchamps and of course right above the amazing Spa Grand Prix Circuit. Well worth taking your bike for an explore along these old routes. Spa town is great, do visit the 'thermes' at the top of the hill in Spa, a great way to relax.

A really lovely place to explore and be at one with nature. We learnt a lot about local species and plants and felt very relaxed as you’re able to do the route at your own place (leisurely it took us about 2hrs) Great for kids with lots of playground areas and ideal for picnics with stunning views. It was not busy at all when we went although the weather was lovely, which really made the visit all the more peaceful and enjoyable. Outdoor fun for all ages. Highly recommend!

This was the cherry on top of the cake! I was already so delighted with the whole city. But when on a lovely warm afternoon I decided to go to the Bovarie and was literally flabbergasted! The green areas along the river are just so enchanting. The Museum building is magnificent so is the cafe of the museum. The views are incredible. What an unforgettable afternoon.

Domaine de Berinzenne

In the heart of the Spa forest and on the edge of the Fagne de Malchamps, the Domaine of Bérinzenne offers spaces freely accessible to the public: panoramic tower, park with pond and picnic areas. The Museum of Forest and Water “P.Noé” presents the natural environments of the region thanks to an innovative scenography. (Closed on Mondays) A starting point for many walks, the Maison de la Nature has a shop, a cafeteria and a multipurpose room for conferences and temporary exhibitions. (Closed on weekends and public holidays)

This nature area borders the ‘Fagne de Malchamps’ nature area. We wanted hiking and did the yellow trail, which is 5km. This is well indicated and took us more than an hour; we did not go into the tower. For me the area was a surprise. I always associated the Ardennes region with hills. Seeing the plains was magnificent and reminded me of watching the endless Serengeti.

A hidden Belgium gem - great place if you like nature, hiking and disconnecting for a couple of hours. And not even a long drive from Brussels. There are various hiking routes, very well singled. We did one with a medium length/ difficulty level and it was perfect (around 6 hours of peace, not very challenging climb, and beautiful scenery). Make sure you bring water, good shoes and energy. Parking is not ideal (pretty small, it was already fool on a Sunday morning), but you can find something around.

I went here when I was a kid once, and returned not expecting a whole lot more than a bit of nostalgia, but there is a lot more to it than that. I wish I'd come earlier in the day as there was so much to see! This is a set of attactions, which includes a museum of archeological finds, that I did not have enough time for to see, and a museum that shows mannequins involved in old timey occupations, which was endearing. The main things are the animal park and the caves though. The animal park is visited in a safari bus, it has all the larger native European animals, and the landscape is stunning. The caves were much more impressive than I remembered them. It is quite a walk underground, something like 2 kilometres and 500 steps, so this is not something for the very young or very old. Of course, this complex of caves has been open to the public for 200 years, which means it is not in pristine condition. But the sheer size of it, the size and the variation of rock formations, and the whole presentation of it is truly impressive. The guide was lovely, and there is a short, artistic light show halfway trough. If you do not speak French or Dutch you may want to ask for help at the information desk, as this is a destination that mostly sees visitors from Belgium and the Netherlands.
