What to do and see in Taveuni Island, Fiji: The Best Places and Tips

February 17, 2018 Toi Mattera

Sure, it’s a bit rainy here. But a lush tropical paradise needs water—otherwise you wouldn’t see such brilliant flowers everywhere. The black-sand beaches provide contrast to the riot of color everywhere else. Nature-lovers can see many of Fiji’s indigenous species, especially in Bouma National Heritage Park (where you should also stop at Bouma Falls).

We have dove many places including Galapagos Islands, Raja Ampat, Cocos Islands, Philippines, and can say that this dive operation is one of the most customer focused, safe, and pleasurable operations we have used. They somehow manage to cater to snorkelers, beginners, and advanced divers without making anyone feel they were not the priority. We had 4 divers max for each dive master and they grouped us based on ability. That allowed us to fully explore even with beginners on board. And the rainbow reef lives up to its name. I can't remember diving anywhere else with so many species of fish, hard coral, soft coral, and critters.
Julie and her staff were amazing. Sam patiently helped us on our first day to get weights etc figured out and then Bose, Julie, and Mouri took us for the rest of the dives. All were competent and the dive briefings in advance were comprehensive. Our last dive was hard to end, but that just means we need to come back!
Fiji is a country of smiles and joy and that attitude permeates this operation. On top of that, Julie had a dive operation in Hawaii and it is run with an extremely high standard that carried over.
Vinaka to Julie and the crew!

Bouma National Heritage Park

This magnificent rainforest park offers superb swimming and hiking, and harbors the mysterious tagimoucia flower, said to grow only here and thrive no place else in the world.

Reviewed By lamontravel - California

We came here with our college-aged kids from the Mission at Natuvu Creek to see the water falls. After about an hour drive from the docks in Taveuni, we arrived at the Bouma National Heritage Park office. It was a short ten minute walk to the first falls. It had rained recently and we were told the walkway to the second and third falls were pretty muddy, slippery and steep. So we decided to stay at the lower falls. We had the place to ourselves as everyone else proceeded to the second and/or third falls right away. The falls were beautiful, and the water was a decent temperature, albeit too cold by Fijian standard. We're from Southern California where the ocean is considered warm at 68-70 degrees Fahrenheit. My son swam to the ledge behind the falls and jumped in, many times. The drop is about 12-14 feet. The younger guides jumped in with him and had a great time. We ate our lunch there and enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness of the area. It is definitely a worthwhile excursion to do!

Pack a lunch and head over to see these three Waterfalls, each on a different altitude level.

Hiking to the first waterfall is easy and the sights are beautiful. The second waterfall is a little more challenging as there is rushing water you need to cross. If you can navigate that the second waterfall does not disappoint! We did not make it to the third waterfall because if was a little to treacherous.

Beginning at Lavena village, this guided walk takes you along Taveuni's wild southeastern coastline, past breathtaking views, black sand Beaches and beautiful Forests.

We didnt do the walk - but took the bus to Lavena and back. This is an adventure in itself and very interesting. The buses are windowless providing natural air-conditioning. The bus will stop at a shop and wait while someone goes to buy their bread (or whatever). The scenery is magnificent and and your fellow passengers interesing and friendly. Just make sure that you have the timetable sorted so there is a bus returning the same day!!

This team of diving professionals do an excellent job! They were very fun, experienced, and thoughtful every step of the way. We were in the process of getting our open water certification here and made all of our first dives memorable, fun and safe. Equipment was in great shape and the staff was prepared and knowledgeable. All of our dives were in different places that highlighted different things, landscapes, sharks, barracuda, etc. I look forward to diving with them again some day.

We had an amazing day snorkeling a couple of sites on Rainbow Reef (fish factory and cabbage patch). The professional and personal service from the Dive Academy is second to none. We had an exclusive tour with just myself and my husband - it felt like we were the only people on the reef that day! Marina guided us through the sites and is very knowledgeable - it was just the perfect pace and such alot of fun.
I'd recommend Dive Academy Fiji to anyone wanting to just snorkel, dive or freedive as you'll get such a fantastic service from some lovely friendly people.

A combination of the garden of Eden and a seedling of the Venus project. The creation of the Gaia tree sanctuary is truly a work of passion and magic. The amount of work that must have gone into creating this paradise must have been monumental!
Natasha and her troop of kitchen ladies create works of art that are almost too beautiful to eat. The freshly squeezed sugar cane drinks are as special as all the other magical drinks. Matt's tour of the grounds and introduction to carefully selected edible and medicinal plants is an experience not to be missed.
It is impossible to explain the magic, so just go and visit. A true bargain for your money.

My wife and I were on our honeymoon just down the road on Taveuni and this sailing trip was recommended to us by the staff at our resort. At first we hesitated not knowing what to expect but fortunately we went for it anyway with another couple. Paul and Helena take you out sailing on their relatively large, comfortable boat to a small group of Islands, one of which is deserted for a day of sailing, snorkeling (fairly nice reef), excellent food, and just Fiji time relaxation. They're expert sailors, expert cooks, and fun people to be around. Overall this was money well spent. We highly recommend, and would do this again next time we get to Taveuni. Thanks guys!

Civa Pearl Farm

Subsequent to Tropical Cyclone Winston and the relocation of the farming activities, farm tours have been suspended. For pearl sales, our Boutique in Matei is open for business - all visitors welcome. Monday through Saturday, 8am to 4 pm.

Reviewed By gatorboyOrlando_FL - Orlando, FL

We made an appointment to see Claude and his pearls on our way to the Bouma Park. Good idea that we had a driver as the turn-off to access the road to the waterfront would not have been recognizable otherwise. You park at the waters edge and take a small boat out to the facility on stilts. There you are introduced to the types and procedures used to make Fijian pearls, which, while similar to those from Tahiti, have different challenges. There are loose and some mounted pearls for sale, but not strands. This is not a large operation like you will find in the large towns of Fiji, but then the prices are a lot more reasonable. One of the interesting aspects is the different colors of Fijian pearls. He does offer different grades and also takes orders for pearls that he may not then have in stock. As part of the visit you can snorkel and see part of his "farm." Bring your own gear and also water/reef shoes. He also comes to various hotels with his product and takes credit cards. Interesting and fun visit.
