A well maintained park with good walks around the lake. There is a great deal to discover here so do visit and allow time to savour the atmosphere. You will need to activate the waterfall by depressing a switch nearby. Same with the Fountain. There is a comprehensive playground for all children. Themed areas and a wooden waterwheel can be found as you wander through. The cricket ground is interesting, circular with natural tiered Seating. The tea house enables you to linger longer. The icecream outlet sells Kapiti icecream. A grand Fernery will keep you absorbed with it’s tunnels and abundance of foliage.

The Copthorne hotel is good hotel. Rooms are good and clean with nice location. The staff are very helpful and check in procedures was very fast. The hotel is very humble in the buffet and not much of choices or selection are available.
All in all, it’s an average hotel.

Tawhiti Museum

Tawhiti MuseumWidely acclaimed as one of the most innovative museums in New Zealand, Tawhiti uses life size exhibits and scale models to capture the past in a series of super-realistic displays. All the displays – including the life size figures created from moulds cast from real people – are designed and built on the premises. Whether the subject is shipping, farming, Railways, or just a small corner of a colonial kitchen, the attention given to research and detail is the same. “I hope my enthusiasm for local history comes through the displays. I’m particularly aware of drawing children into our exhibits – they mustn’t feel museums are old buildings, full of old dusty junk. Historical display should be exciting and relevant – I’m always looking for more creative ways of making it just that” Nigel Ogle.

Shame on the New Plymouth District Council, for not supporting or promoting this hidden gem. Tawhiti Museum is a truly unique Enterprise and the attention to detail is simply stunning. You will need 3-4 hours to do it justice and the entry fee is only $15. It must be the best private museum in the country and uses life size exhibits and scale models to present NZ history in a series of brilliant, realistic displays.
There are multiple themes and exhibits as well as a Disneyland style ride through history. You sit in a boat and glide through the dark to a Maori village with trading and battles in 4D.
There's an extensive collection of farm machinery, horse-drawn and engine-powered, and an outside Bush Railway in a relic from the region's logging past that runs through the bush on reclaimed tracks. You would swear the models along the way are real, with every face different. If you’re short on time skip the railway trip, but you must do the mini boat trip through history.

Mount Taranaki

An absolutely fantastic hostel in New Plymouth located right beside all the supermarkets. The facilities are all clean and excellent. The beds are comfy, bathrooms big and clean. The kitchen is huge with every utensil you ever want. There is a big tv with Sky, free WiFi which is usually pretty quick and a ton of common areas both indoors and outdoors to sit, relax, chat, read or whatever.
It's a mix of a backpackers hostel which is what I did and motel with individual units. This led to a really great mix of people that you don't normally get. I always stay at backpackers and it's usually full of 20 and 30 something German English, Americans etc but the first time I stayed here there was a family of 3 generations who was staying here and great to talk to them. I don't normally see that.
It's a member of BBH family so if you have BBH card you get $4 off which as well as everything I mentioned above means it's also fantastic value.
I can't recommend staying here enough if you visiting New Plymouth and/or climbing Taranaki like I was.

Amazing terraced Gardens with paths to explore. Some bit steep so need mobility to access some if these. Sitting down by the river listening to it and the birds was music to the soul. Amazing Rhododendron flowers and ponds everywhere. Nissed the cottage tour so definitely will be back for that as well as taking a picnic lunch to have by the river. There are BBQs to use there as well. Could spend all day here.

If you are in New Plymouth as well as the Govett Brewster gallery, don't miss a visit to the Puke Ariki museum. Really great exhibits ... the format of the information is engaging and makes finding out interesting facts a real pleasure.
Great places to eat?...the Bach around near the port on the waterfront. Take note of the slick bach decor and buy a very clever and unique vintage fabric apron.
Also try the Social Kitchen in the CBD... very interesting menu and atmosphere.

Amazing views each step of the way. Half the climb is via steep but well built stairs with little platforms every couple of flights to take a much needed rest and a photo. The other half is via a very steep rock climb with a chain rail for assistance. Definately for the brave and/or able bodied!!

Te Henui Walkway

Reviewed By Narziss - New Zealand

We were advised by a local that this is the walk/cycle way that they use and enjoy the most. It is delightful, most of it in the shade as it follows the Te Henui river upstream, which you don't really notice until you get to turn around and then find yourself coasting back.It departs from just by the cafe on the main walkway so is easy to find and the cafe makes for great stop on the way back.
