Vapriikin Museokeskus

Reviewed By vasavapr - Lappeenranta, Finland

We visited the museum(s) on late Friday afternoon. Since we arrived with only about three hours before closing time (We still regret not arriving earlier) we had to rush through quite lot of Exhibitions due to limited time.
The museum is located in some old industrial building that is now re-purposed as museum(s). There are at least seven (if not more) museums including. We enjoyed the most visiting the museum of games. Some of the old games took back us to childhood times. We ignored the age limits and enjoyed playing those games. Still very addictive!!
The part with media museum was also very fascinating. The part with different type of telegraph equipment was very interesting. I strongly recommend trying the telegraph equipment. The media museum also has other interesting communication equipments, old printing press equipments, cameras etc.
The hockey hall of fame had trophies, photos and memorabilia from Finnish Ice hockey (national team and leagues). Since I have only recently found liking for ice-hockey it was bit mixed bag for me.
The section about history of buildings in Tampere had exhibition about architecture (mostly illustrative pictures and models). There were also movies about Neighborhoods in Tampere and life during earlier times. It was interesting to see how housing, building and living evolved over time.
The postal museum had Exhibitions explaining how postal services worked in past and how it evolved over time. We had to cut short our visit to this part as the place was about to close.
We ended our visit with a quick drink at the cafeteria.
This museum has something for everyone, every age and every interest. There is a cafeteria that serves meals and that could help in case someone is planning to spend long time here. We would definitely a longer visit during our next trip to Tampere.

Tampere Cathedral

Reviewed By mpre53 - Tampere, Finland

Tampereen Tuomionkirkko contains some very impreesive artwork. The most famous painting inside is the "wounded angel". The artwork around the perimeter of the Cathedral caused quite a stir back in the day, as it was a series of some "anatomically correct" naked young boys. Nowadays, it's no longer controversial. There's no charge to enter, and there's an auto play organ that will serenade visitors for about 15-20 minutes on the hour. Finland has a plethora of local churches, most of which contain some beautiful art work on the inside. This Cathedral is one of Finland's most beautiful.

Amuri Museum of Workers' Housing

The Amuri museum quarter consists of five residential and four outbuildings. All of the former lie in their original positions as do the outbuildings.

Reviewed By Raymond W - Chengdu, China

This museum is situated in former housing for workers at the Finlayson factory, which was formerly one of the most important manufacturing plants in Scandinavia.
Dating back to the late 19th century, these simple wooden houses provide a window into the living conditions of workers of the period. Even better, it has been meticulously decorated with period furnishings, giving a very good view of the very spartan life common people lead at that time. Often just a bed and a few basic items for cooking and working are found in these rooms.
The museum also shows how living conditions improved for people over the decades, with radios, record players and other luxuries slowly appearing. This museum makes a really good contrast with the palaces of the European tourist circuit.

The Sarkanniemi Theme Park is a nice attraction in Tampere just around 15 minutes from the city center. It offers various rollercoasters and smaller fair attractions. On Friday afternoon we waited maximally 15 minutes. Great about this park is that you do not have to pay the entrance fee. If you want to visit just one attraction, you pay just for one ride 8.90 €. When you plan you try more rollercoasters, it is better you pay the unlimited entrance fee 41 € or only i.e. evening pass for 31 €. On their website they have also special offers.

Lenin Museum

Welcome to the Birthplace of the Soviet Union! The renewed museum provides a vivid, comprehensive and critical view of the history Russia and Finland share. It takes visitors on a fascinating journey through some of the most remarkable events in our history: The Russian Revolution, the founding of the Soviet Union, Finland's independence, the Second World War and finally the collapse of the Soviet Union. The museum hall at the Tampere Workers' Hall is known as the birthplace of the Soviet Union - it's where Russian revolutionaries Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin met for the first time. This meeting that happened in 1905 had global impacts: the two men decided to arrange a revolution in Russia, found the Soviet Union and to let Finland become independent.

Reviewed By Chez-Mob - Vancouver, Canada

This museum is for people who know and are interested in the somewhat difficult history of Finland and its relations with the USSR/Russia and Vladimir Lenin. It is in a grand historic building where Lenin actually had meetings (even the bathrooms are grand) and easy to get to - Tampere is a very walkable city. Every option for presenting the information has been used, including models, historical video and audio, and maps. The exhibits present a compelling picture of the linkages between Lenin, Finland, and Tampere in particular, and also says something about early organized labour movements in Finland. The exhibits seem to have been modernized because references to Russian gulags are included.

Sara Hilden Art Museum

The Sara Hildén Art Museum, which is the permanent home of the collection of modern art, Finnish and foreign, owned by the Sara Hildén Foundation, is maintained by the City of Tampere. The museum places on exhibition works belonging to the foundation and also arranges changing Exhibitions. The museum is located next to the Näsinneula observation tower in the Särkänniemi area.

This is smallish art museum close to the Näsijärvi and at the footsteps of Näsinneula tower. The place itself is beautiful, but of course the highlights are the Exhibitions. They have 2-3 Exhibitions a year and I have never been disappointed. Highly recommended.

Moomin Museum

Reviewed By Jaydee51 - Symbister, United Kingdom

We have for many years been fans of Tove Jansson and her creations the Moomins. We especially made a trip to Finland so we could visit the new Moomin Museum opened earlier this year. We were not disappointed! For anyone who is a fan of the Moomins I strongly recommend a visit to this supremely excellent new museum. Ther museum is superbely constructed and tells the story of Tove Jansson, her life and the characters she created, the Moomins. It is most child friendly with lots of interactive elements with multi-language options as well as displays of dioramas created by Tove.
When greeted by a member of museum staff you are given a museum guide, available in quite a few languages, that help you find your way around the museum and tell you about the exhibition. As in common with most museums photography is not allowed. You'll need to visit to to really enjoy it. This is a great museum for both adult and child museum fans. When we were there we saw visitors of all ages.
