Mokuhankan

Mokuhankan is a traditional woodblock print shop located in the famous district of Asakusa in Tokyo. You can find newly published prints as well as a wide selection of antique offerings. (We are currently closed due to the pandemic, and will reopen when general tourism returns to Japan.)

Last year, my wife and I stumbled on this shop. Loved it. Purchased a few prints, and enjoyed talking prints with Dave. So we came back a year later, and had an even more amazing visit. Dave even gave us a tour and took us upstairs where the magic happens, and it was so cool to watch his printers making wonderful works of art. Even had the please of meeting Ayumi San (I love her ghost prints). And between visits, I browse the website and add even more prints to my collection. My wife and I spend a month or so in Japan each year, and making my pilgrimage to Mokuhankan will definitely be a mandatory trip.

Kimono & Geisha Experience COCOMO

In television and film shooting, COCOMO has skilled staff to make up many actresses and actors. We always learn genuine technology independently. In order to make your eyes bigger, to make your face smaller, and to show you young, we sometimes use original special makeup with individuality. We resolve inferiority complex and transform it into another person. Especially white painting of OIRAN, MAIKO, GEISYA experience is deep. By applying a little time, the texture will be different. Traditional makeup is very difficult, so those who did not agree with other stores often come to COCOMO for a challenge again. These are also very popular with repeaters. At COCOMO, we will continue to offer at the lowest price so that customers can come close to famous kimono easily. COCOMO has abundant kinds and sizes of kimonos. Walking clothes, adult ceremonial kimono, HAKAMA of graduation ceremony, Shichigosan Kimono kimono, HAIKARA of Taisho Romant, wedding costume, OIRAN, MAIKO, GEISHA, SAMURAI.

This was a lovely experience and one of my favorite activities on this vacation. The online booking process was easy. I arrived 30 minutes early to my appointment and they were able to start me early. It starts with paperwork and then they switch you into their slippers. She explained the process and reiterated the inclusions of my package. They have a coat rack and she took my big backpack to the back for storage. Then I had an escort take me upstairs to choose your color of my kimono. Then she took me to the changing room to change into their kimono socks, undergarment, (which looks like a tube top and loose shorts) and a robe. They had a locker to store my clothes. Then I sat down at their vanity table to choose my hair and make up style. There are sooooo many options of kimonos, hair accessories, and make up styles. Do your research before you go, but I’m sure anything you choose will turn out beautiful. Then one person worked on my hair while a second person worked on my make up. They have press on nails and the sticker is very sticky so expect your nail polish to be ruined when you remove the press ones. It took about 50 minutes. They are very detail oriented and you can tell they are very experienced. After that, we went to a different floor to get dressed in our kimono. So you choose the collar collar, your kimono, belt, then the top fabric. It’s amazing how much work is put into the kimono and belt. The photo studio is on that same floor. The photographer told me how to pose, which is helpful because I feel awkward posing in front of a camera. He used different props and told me how to move. My escort who did my hair stayed with me to fix my hair and move my kimono around. After we were done, they give you the option of taking photos on your camera or phone. She helped me undress then we went downstairs to take down my hair. She took down my hair, but they have cotton and solution to take off your make up. They don’t have showers, but they have dry shampoos, a sink and soap to wash your face. Then I went down to the main lobby where she showed me a page of top photos they chose. They have different packages where you can opt to have prints, sent to your phone, or on a CD. Overall great experience. The staff did a stellar job with hair, make up, and photos. Even though my ticket said it was a Japanese speaking event, they all spoke relatively good English.

After dressing in our ninja gear and posing for pictures, we learned some history of ninjas, did warm up and then had great fun trying out various ninja weapons including a sword and throwing shurikans (stars,) darts/chopsticks and even blow darts! Our instructor was great! He took it seriously, but also made it fun. It was a really great experience.

Hanayashiki

Hanayashiki, Japan’s first and oldest amusement park has been around since 1853. It originally began as a flower park, until its management started added in more attractions to transform it into an amusement park.

Reviewed By Nonnapn - Manila, Philippines

Before Disney, there was Hanayashiki. A small, vintage amusement park with a few retro rides, some snack stalls and a charmingly simple atmosphere. Pre-teens would be bored but toddlers will love this place.
