Taebaeksan Provincial Park

Reviewed By kjmagnuson - Los Angeles, California

Taebaeksan on a clear day is simply majestic. When me and my friend reached the peak, we were at a loss for words. The view was endless green mountain ridges, seemingly forever. After visiting about 12 of Korea's excellent National Parks, the view I was fortunate enough to witness at Taebaeksan equalled the very best.
The hike can be done in a couple of hours. The beauty of the mountain ranges in Korea is that each peak is almost unanamously breathtaking, and possible to hike in the confines of a day. Like many sacred Mountains in Korea, Taebaeksan has a weathered altar at its summit.
Now when I think of the beauty and wild natural elements of Gangwon-do, I think of Taebaeksan. This may be suprising because Seoraksan National Park is located in the same province. While Seoraksan is undoubtebly exceptional and surpasses Taebaeksan in rugged beauty, however Taebaeksan feels like its just you and the mountain.

We took a bus (mid-week) from Donghae here (1200 won). Spent 1-2 hrs exploring the area. Lovely craggy rocks (was a sunny day!) an dwaves crashing in. Great vistas from the look-out post rising above and plenty of great views around the free park. If you walk north it leads to some Seating areas with more great views south (then on to another 'art-park' at the northern most area. Small, pleasing beach to the south and plenty of food/drink places. (Bus schedule is on the bus shelter - they are infrequent!) Relaxing time....

Jeongseon Rail Bike

Reviewed By Ana P - Seoul, South Korea

I made a reservation for a two-seat and a four-seat bike. I wasn't able to pay but I called them the day before our schedule and they said to just come and buy the tickets on site. We were at the Rail Bike station by 10:10 am and I was able to buy the tickets. My husband accompanied his parents in the four-seater while I and my son took the two-seater. The bike was easy to pedal ~ in fact my 9-year old son did it most of the time. The only time I took over was during the last kilometer ~ it was a little tough.
The scenery is just beautiful in the middle of June. The trees are in full bloom ~ everything is just so alive. On the way back, we took the free train and again ~ I was awed by the beauty of the scenery. Definitely worth the trip from Seoul!

Hwanseongul Cave

Reviewed By Christina B - Europe

The biggest lime stone cave in Korea. Its length is 6.5km and there are fantastic stalagmites, stalactites, about 10 lakes and Waterfalls. Some spots of interest include stalactites that look like the Great Wall of China and many other uniquely shaped figures.
The temp inside of the cave stands at 12-24℃ in the summer and 8-9℃ in the winter.
It was raining lightly on the day we visited. & I was actually thankful for it! If it hadn't been raining we would have walked up to the cave which was really steep! Since it was raining we took the monorail instead!
Was the kids first time ever going to a cave. They thought it was pretty neat.

Taebaek Coal Museum

If you're in the area, it's definitely a nice place to visit, especially if you're with kids. There are mini trains hauling coal to climb on and rocks, rocks and more rocks to see. Nice little beginning or ending to any hike or walk in the area. They suggest that it takes a good hour to an hour and a half to get through the whole museum.

Chuam Beach

Reviewed By SHIRLEY_LYY - Penang Island, Malaysia

This is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the beautiful sea view while sipping a cup of tea at a cafe just along the beach. The café even played the theme songs from a few of the Korean hit drama. Such a nice cosy ambience .
Remember to bring along a big straw hat and apply enough sunscreen as there are not many places with shade. The sea is very clear and the place is currently not crowded with people.

We visited there without expectation, but there was very big cave, and was magnificent. There was many exhibits part, and natural capescape part. The both was excellent. In the entrance of cave, small tram was operated. If you visited Jeongseon area, I recommand to go there. Very beautiful, excellent cave..

Yongyeon Cave

This attraction cost my friend and I 3000 KRW per person ($3) to enter. You get shuttled to the cave in an mini van with air con. Perfect for friends or couples to do together! You are provided with hard hats as a form of protection. Wear comfortable walking shoes with a good grip as some areas inside the cave are slippery. The inside of the cave is beautifully lit up with LED lights but the beauty of the cave is wonderfully preserved. The loop should talk you around 50 - 80 minutes. Take a camera! This is an attraction not to be missed if you are visiting Taebaek.
