What to do and see in Suizhong County, China: The Best Places and Tips

July 27, 2017 Natalie Tallman

Suizhong County (simplified Chinese: 绥中县; traditional Chinese: 綏中縣; pinyin: Suízhōng Xiàn) is a county of southwestern Liaoning, People's Republic of China. It is located on the northern coast of the Bohai Sea and is the southernmost county of Huludao City (as well as non-peninsular Liaoning), bordering Hebei to the southwest. The county has an area of 2,765 square kilometres (1,068 sq mi), a population of 640,000, and is an economically important region within Huludao. Suizhong is the home of the first Chinese citizen to travel in space, Yang Liwei.

Jiumenkou Great Wall

The site is very beautiful. Not many tourist (Chinese or foreigners). After going to Mutianyu it's a much smaller portion of the wall but because there isn't many tourist worth our climb. Cost 80RMB each (more expensive than Mutianyu 45 RMB).
As you are there you should include a trip to the Old Dragon Head, where the Great Wall ends in the sea.
We took the 7am fast train from Beijing and got there at 930 AM.
At the train station you will be swamped by taxi, tours wanting to bring you to the City wall, Jiumenkou and or Old Dragon head.
Advise; take the taxi by meter as we payed 188RMB for a return trip plus for the Old Dragon Head. Taxi by meter from train station to Jiumenkou is only about 40RMB. And there are taxis at the entrance to take you back.
If you are going to go for a day trip it's worth doing the Jiumenkou, Old Dragon Head and City Wall.
We took the fast train back to Beijing at around 730 PM

Huludao Jiumenkou Great Wall

Reviewed By Andrew M

My son and I visited Jiumenkou by taking an early bullet train from Beijing South Railway to Shanhaiguan. The trip takes 3 hours. The taxis are not organised in queues as is the case at most railway stations in China. Most taxis are unwilling to use their meter, and it will probably be necessary to agree a price before getting into the taxi. The correct fare is 40 yuan, and there are many taxis. The drive to Jiumenkou takes 20 minutes, as the taxis race along the winding roads.
On reaching the entrance, there is a 15 minute walk to the site of the wall from the ticket office. The 90 yuan ticket gives access to the wall, ming tunnel and aviary. I suggest that the great wall hike be done first, as it was very hot on the wall. The hike to the end of the wall takes 30 minutes, and great pictures can be taken of the wall during the climb. At the end of the hike, the wall is in disrepair and ends at a natural cliff which was used as a part of the fortification.
Be careful on the hike back down, as some areas may be slippery if wet and others are at steep downward angles. We then visited the bridge and took more photos. The concrete slabs that are joined together to control the water levels near to the bridge are of particular interest. There are boats available that offer rides on the river, but this was unpopular as better pictures of the bridge can be taken on the hike.
After the wall and bridge visit, we walked 10 minutes to the Ming Tunnel, which was air conditioned, and a welcome break from the heat. The tunnel was very narrow and a long walk (maybe 15 minutes). It was used by the ming soldiers to get behind enemy lines. There were many displays of statues depicting military life at Shanhaiguan, and also a Budha photo op in the cave and a bell that all the kids were ringing. Ensure that your flash is working properly and the camera battery is fully charged as the lighting in the cave is very dim and a flash is required. The aviary is passed on the hike up, and consists mainly of peacocks. This can be seen in 5 minutes.
The best souvenir shopping is along the path at the entrance of the walk to the ming tunnel. Beware of the "clam" tourist trap. This is where you will be approached by persons stating that you can pay one yuan for the pearls found in a clam, which are of different sizes. Usually there is one pearl in a clam or none, but these clams were stuffed with pearls (maybe 40-50 in each). You will be expected to pay once the pearls are counted. I gave the vendor 5 yuan and told her off for including her young daughter in the scam. Be warned!
Taking the return taxi to Shanhaiguan will probably be a little more expensive, as again the taxis were unwilling to use their meters and negotiations started at 100 yuan. We walked back to the ticket office, and got a taxi for 60 yuan back to the railway station. The entire trip could be completed in 3-4 hours depending on your level of fitness.

We took a train from Rome to Pisa, when we arrived at the station we went to the kiosk to buy another train ticket to see the Leaning Tower. The Tower is not that big and if you have time you can go up to the top (extra cost). It's worth a trip.
