The drive up this valley is absolutely breathtaking! One of the most beautiful drives we have taken in an already stunning country! Beware though, the road is narrow and not everyone understands that everyone needs to give space to each others! Lots of good hiking opportunities are also available through the valley.

Olden

Olden was our most scenic stop on a recent cruise. Sailing up Nordfjord is stunning with the mountains and beautifully coloured water. The village of Olden is cute with a bit of shopping for those inclined as well as a nice place to walk around. The old church in the middle of town is worth popping in to see the interior. We chose an excursion up to see Briksdal Glacier - an excellent choice. It included a scenic bus ride followed by a stimulating hike with beautiful views along the way.

Briksdal Glacier (Briksdalbreen)

Visited Olden and Briksdal in June and it is definitely worth the visit and it exceeded all my exceptions. As you take the tranquil 45 minute walk to the glacier you are surrounded by breathtaking snow capped mountains, lush green spots of grass and mountain flowers and flowing waterfalls which you can stand beside and soak up its spray of water. However, if walking isn't your thing or you are unable to, you can take a troll car up the winding paths to the glacier although if you are able to make the trek it is 100% worth it.

The very sight of the 19th century stones placed along the old road is a moment in itself, when you realise those same stones have been there for more than a century, protecting those who travelled along it. A very beautiful drive where you must stop often and take photos. But don't forget to just enjoy the view from time to time.

The toll road cash only is paid into a small box. Great view of the glacier you drive very close and a short 5 min walk even closer. I would highly recommend for a short trip. We went in the afternoon it was quiet which was nice.

Olden Tourist Information

We docked at Olden, this trip was not offered by the cruise line, I found it the details on this site. The local tourist office is located at the dock side from there I was able to purchase our tickets for the bus (leaves about every half hour) and the skylift. I am sure that this experience was the highlight of our holiday most memorable. With a bit more time and a lot more younger there were numerous walks across the top of the mountains I would have loved to have done. The location of the restaurant was amazing when we wnt they were experiencing technical problems with there credit card fortunately I had some readies 2 hot chocolates (rated 10 out of 10) under a tenner.

OMG! AMAZING skylift up and AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING views!!! Tickets are a tiny bit pricey just for a skylift HOWEVER, once you’re up there and see the views the price will be the last thing on your mind. Beautiful restaurant at the top. People paragliding off the top. It was beautiful and one of my favorite parts of my trip to Norway. Don’t miss this amazing view!

Olden itself is just a small town with a few shops but surrounded by majestic scenery. We took an excursion into the National Park and it is just amazing, arms of the largest glacier in Europe peeping out from every valley, stunning waterfalls and rushing rivers. We took a boat trip from the furthest end of the Fijord practically at the base of the Glacier high above us. Just wonderful.

Olden Old Church

This Delightful Structure rests in this small village nestled in the village. Built in the mid 16th century is worth a visit to take you to a time gone by. The Church only holds about 250.

A fairly short walk from the cruise port and you will find this beautiful old church full of character
