What to do and see in St. Barthelemy, St. Barthelemy: The Best Hidden Gems Things to do

January 30, 2022 Marianna Hollaway

Christopher Columbus added St. Barthelemy, or St. Barts to his collection in 1493, but the French soon stepped in. Today, the chic Caribbean island - officially a department of France - is a popular winter getaway for people from mainland France, the rest of Europe and North America. Keep in shape and walk between attractions or get a rental car to see more of the island. Beachgoers can choose between strands such as Grand Saline, if nude sunbathing appeals, or shady, isolated Colombier Beach.

Colombier Beach

Relax on this shady, isolated beach - after that 30 minute walk to get there from the main road, you'll need it.

Reviewed By Cinghiale

Getting to Colombier on foot involves a scenic and relatively short hike down a hillside, part of which has "stairs". Perhaps because it is not readily accessible, the beautiful sandy beach was relatively uncrowded. The bay is protected on either side, so even on a somewhat windy day the sea was calm enough for swimming.

Anse du Gouverneur

You won't find crowds at this beautiful beach, but you won't find shade either, so bring an umbrella.

Reviewed By 994linday - Frisco, United States

Gouverneur is a wild and natural beach on the southern coast, a scant 10 minute drive from Gustavia (assuming you don’t miss the turnoff like we did). The road to the beach is steep and winding (and scenic so drive carefully). Parking is convenient. There are no facilities; the beach is sans hotels, restaurants, bars, bathrooms, and possibly bathing suits. Just sand and surf, the way mother nature intended. Gouverneur is a beauty of a beach!
