Red Willow Trails

This is a St Albert hidden gem.The total walk extends for several miles on both sides of the Sturgeon River, though most days I (and my wife) walk the south side for half a mile, have a coffee, and walk back home. Total activity 45 min. The trail is well-used by joggers, cyclists, and other strollers. It is kept clear of snow in winter by superb maintenance crews and borders for the most part a natural riparian vista: geese, ducks, the occasional heron (yesterday), muskrats and beavers abound!

St. Albert Botanic Park

We parked our car inside the St. Albert Botanic Park. Once out of the car, I took my camera and took many flowers. There were all kinds of colors and different flowers as well. We took our walk to not miss anything! This is completely free. We enjoyed what we saw and wished it could go on for more. This is a must see! You will love it!

Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park

Big Lake is shallow and supports a large nesting colony of Franklin's gulls, migrating flocks of tundra swans, and numerous nesting and migrating waterfowl and shorebirds. It has been recognized as a globally significant Important Bird Area. More than 220 bird species have been observed here.

I wasn't aware of this provincial park sitting just outside Edmonton and St. Albert until earlier this year. It is very close to the Anthony Henday highway (take the Ray Gibbons exit toward St. Albert), and is basically on my way to work. Since first visiting in the summer, I have returned every couple of weeks. In the fall, it was almost a different experience each week, with different types of birds migrating through the area. One week, there were thousands of ducks, then geese, and after all the masses of birds had made their way through the area and the lake/river were starting to freeze over, the muskrats were out in force (saw 20-30 of them on the river at the same time). Saw a magnificent bald eagle a few weeks ago. On this latest visit in January, I saw a beautiful pileated woodpecker, as well as the smaller downy woodpeckers, and other small winter birds that are usually found in the area. Great 2.5 hour walk through the woods (packed down snow trails through the woods beside the lake were easily walkable).

St. Albert Farmers' Market

Very good farmers market with lots of fresh produce, baking, meats and assorted other food items. Parking is a premium, free parking fills up fast and you should plan to walk a distance to get there. Enjoy the open air market and bringing home dinner that someone else prepared.

I enjoy they drop-in classes for the flexibly. Instead of a show the whole family (3 generations) will go enjoy their favorite activities or work out. Then gather at one of the meeting areas for a snack or beverage.
