January 30, 2022 Darwin Bolte

Florida’s Southwest Gulf Coast contains a constellation of enticing coastal gems. Stunning beaches, including Ft. Myers Beach, Tigertail Beach and Pensacola Beach, fringe the Gulf, down the I-75 from Tampa to Naples. Sanibel Island’s shelling attracts thousands. Cape Coral’s waters are paradise for flyfishing. Golfers adore spectacular courses in Marco Island and Naples. Glorious sunny days and deliciously warm turquoise waters beckon in this often overlooked corner of the Sunshine State.

Legacy Trail

Reviewed By leafpeeper98 - Salem, United States

This bike trail was our whole reason for visiting Venice, FL which runs along a canal. We stayed at the Ramada Venezia as it is within 2 blocks of the trail. We rented bikes (hybrids) from Bikes and Trikes (great bikes!) who were nice enough to deliver and pick up the bikes to our hotel. There are a few other hotels along the trail which stretches all the way back to Sarasota from Casperson Beach (a beautiful, natural, shaded beach). There is much signage along the way, and it seems a very active group of Friends of Legacy Trail does much to maintain it. Just a few bridges to cross, very few actual roads. All in all a wonderful resource for that area. During nice weather you can watch boats along the canal and we even saw a crew team!

Boca Grande Bike Trail

We toured the island by bike. They have done a nice job with streets and plantings. Bike trails are shared with golf carts which gets a bit dicey at times. Good scenery. Plenty of outdoor facilities.

We rented bikes from Acme bicycle shop and rode our bikes every single day. Punta Gorda is bicycle friendly with really nice paths to cycle on. We felt like the residents were very respectful and courteous of us, while on our bikes. So bicycling feels very safe.

We have taken the family here numerous times. We enjoy seeing all of the wildlife, such as raccoons, deer, snakes, gators, birds, reptiles, and bugs. We have never had a dull trip to the preserve and even once biked the entire property all the way up to The Lower Myakka Lake. It's a GREAT place!
