What to do and see in Southern Kyoto, Kinki: The Best Food & Drink

May 5, 2022 Cedrick Jardin

The shrines and temples of Kyoto offer a rare link between modern life in the city and its very ancient past. The Shimogamo Shrine dates to the 6th century and seems suspended in time, its serenity and spiritual power still palpable. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, then see the life-sized Thousand Armed Kannon statues of Sanjūsangen-dō. Enjoy traditional geisha performances, then savor a tranquil meal at a restaurant overlooking the Kamo River.

JD Kai - Food / Sake Tasting

Welcome to the JD Kai. In Japanese, it means to "discover" Japan. We specialize in unique, off-the-beaten-path food and sake tasting tours. We eat and drink our way through the charming Fushimi neighborhood of Kyoto. We visit small, specialty shops all family owned and operated. At each location, we taste something different, giving you a good variety of Japanese flavors. Do you know what "dashi" is? How about obanzai? Junmaishu? We will learn about these important food and sake words and more while interacting with the families of each shop. Whether you are a seasoned foodie or just want to have fun discovering Japanese culture through food and sake, this might be for you!

We loved our cooking class with Mai and Michi, they managed to make us learn a very tasteful recipe just by having fun! They were mindful, funny and very helpful with every step. It was a really great experience that I would recommend to anyone, with or without cooking skills. You will love the class, and the ramen even more!!

Initia Japanese Cooking Class

Initia Japanese Cooking Class is a great way to learn how to make traditional Japanese dishes in English. What we teach is not fancy cuisine, but daily home style meal. We, a local family teach a small number of guests, so the atmosphere is just like cooking at home. This is not just a cooking class. We'd like our guests to have a local experience that you can't have when you just do sightseeing in Japan.
