Kiri no Mori

Access into this beautiful places surrounded by lush greens and rushing rivers isn't easy without a car. Even so the roads in become very narrow and windy. However, if you're a lover of Japanese green tea and all sorts of lovely delectable foods then this is a must visit. There are a few eateries with a proper restaurant facing a the stunning maple trees especially in Autumn, where you can try green tea noodles and their special firm tofu.
There is also a Japanese style tea house where you can sit down and enjoy the sweets leisurely or opt for the cafe which has green tea soft serve. Don't miss the shop where you can try their quality Kirinomori green tea produced locally (you can even see the tea fields as you drive in) before making a purchase. We also tried the green tea purin but preferred the houji tea flavour instead. However, the highlight of the sweets is definitely the green tea daifuku which has a soft chewy layer of mochi coated in green tea and in its centre is a smooth red bean paste mixed with creamy goodness. It's definitely worth the drive in particularly if you enjoy scenic routes and a bit of adventure driving on mountain roads though you can always pay the toll and enter via the expressway.

We stopped here for the usual reasons. I was particularly taken by the mosaic in the bathroom. The shop/food area is a bit smaller than that found at other rest stops.

This small, thoughtfully arranged museum is located in one of the most important papermaking regions of the country. Here you can get a real understanding of the papermaking process, from the varieties of fibers used, to their harvest, processing and sheet forming. There is a shop where hand made paper (washi) and paper products can be purchased as well as a second floor gallery displaying artwork using washi as the primary support.
