Shanghai Ocean Aquarium

Delightfully spacious and well-lit aquarium filled with a great selection of Asian fish. The highlight is the impressive tunnels where you under the tanks and surrounded by fish.

I had left visiting the aquarium till the end of my visit to Shanghai, but I am glad I made the effort to go to it. The adult cost is 160 yuan which is about $24. There is a senior discount for 90 yuan if you show proof of age - I believe you gave to be 60. The aquarium is set on a number of floors and you move by escalator. The highlight of the visit is when you travel under the water through a clear tunnel allowing you to see a variety of sharks, manta rays and a variety of other sea creatures swimming overhead. This area has a moving walkway, so you are transported at a gentle pace. The water here is not river water but a mix of sea water and freshwater. There is something for everyone and, at the end of the tour there is a fast food restaurant if you feel the need for sustenance. A worthwhile visit!

Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park

Great day out at the Park. I petted the dolphins for a RMB299 fee. What a treat. We enjoyed the orca and dolphin shows very much. Since we did not plan to do rides, we watched both shows twice. The penguin, seal pavilions were great too. The down side is that the shark aquarium seems a little small for some of the sharks. Similarly, some of the exhibits in the Arctic pavillon were also a tad small for those specific animals. Perhaps these habitats can be upgraded soon. The other animals looked happy and active, so we really enjoyed ourselves.

Shanghai Zoo (Shanghai Dongwu Yuan)

This was a great trip. The zoo is easy to access through the Metro, and there are loads of animals. There are also lots of refreshments throughout the zoo (however expensive!). The only downsides were the animals we were hoping to see the most (e.g. panda and brown bear) were either sleeping or bored to death! The polar bear seems to be non-existent. The best animal here is the red panda. Just make sure you have plenty of breaks so you don’t get bored at the end.
