What to do and see in Scottish Borders, Scotland: The Best Shopping

April 19, 2022 Renato Branum

A short distance from Edinburgh is a landscape strewn with sturdy hill forts, ancient castles and ruined abbeys that hints at the tumult of the past. It's quite at odds with the picturesque rolling, if windswept, sheep-studded hills and quiet valleys that make all seem agreeably placid to today’s visitor. At its heart are the ruins of four medieval abbeys with Jedburgh, the most complete, the best to visit first for its insights into monastic life. Of the others, Melrose is both the pick of the bunch, and also close to Abbotsford, the sometime home of the Romantic novelist Sir Walter Scott, and a splendid receptacle for his engrossing collection of historical curios. There are fine country houses to visit, notably Mellerstain for its exquisite Robert Adam interiors, and Manderston, the enjoyable swan song of the Edwardian Country House. Anglers should note that the River Tweed is also one of Scotland’s finest salmon-fishing rivers.

What a little gem! Just passing through on't way to Kelso and spotted this place. Anyway thought I might pick up a kilt (unfortunately the armed forces don't come in my waist band ????) the gentleman showed me there was more to this store than army surplus and showed me the way downstairs.... WOW! There was downstairs 2hat can only be called a war museum, an absolute cracker of a find and I thoroughly enjoyed myself (just need to lose enough weight to fit in to one of their magnificent kilts. 100% recomended this shop, not only when passing but as a trip on it's own. 5 stars!

Really nice place to spend a few hours, for both kids and parents. I really enjoyed the glass design and etching. Pauline was very knowledgeable and explained many of the processes and materials used for glass, metal and wood surfaces.

After walking the superb battlefield trail at nearby Flodden, we called into Coldstream and discovered this beautiful, modern art gallery in the centre of the town, which also offers teas, coffees and cakes - the surroundings and refreshments provided a perfect end to a lovely summer's day. The gallery itself has a diverse collection of tasteful art, jewellery, and pottery, showcasing local artists. They also sell cards, scarves and other hand crafted gifts. We have since discovered they run photography courses and plan to sign-up later in the summer.
