Teochew Chinese Cemetery

Stumbled upon this huge 40 acre "park" which has overgrown a 120 year-old Chinese cemetery while out on a recent bike ride. It looks like just another Chinese community centre at first with some green area and outdoor exercise equipment, but cycling past the jogging route entrance, the path leads deeper into the property to a point where you forget you are in a city and there's green grass and trees for as far as you can see. We spent about 45 minutes cycling around the various paths but when we came back out around 3:00 pm, chains were put across the entrance and it seems they restrict bicycles in the afternoon an evening when the place fills up with joggers.

Sathorn Unique Tower

Reviewed By AD5144

Let me tell you a little story... I did a lot of research online and around the actual building to figure out how to conquer this monster of a building. From what I gathered, coming in the morning would be best. A friend and I showed up at 8am where we saw no one guarding the building. Because my research had turned up that we would need a key to enter the stairwell, we thought it best to wait for the guard to show up... He did about 15 minutes later. We sat there attempting to bribe him to go inside but he continually said no and that he was calling the police. after about 30 minutes and getting nowhere, my buddy and I left to grab a coffee and regroup. We then went back around 9:15 hoping that the traffic from the nearby busy street had died down and maybe he would let us sneak in. Again, no dice. We offered more and more money but still got nowhere. This lasted another 30 minutes until another man came in the alleyway who appeared to be another guard. I went over and spoke with the man for about 5 minutes. By the end of the conversation, he finally told me to come back around 2pm. Fast forward a few hours, it's now 1:45pm, my friend and I anxiously walk back up to the side alley of the building where the guards are. We agreed on the what now seems to be standard 500 Baht for entry, they rolled up a small piece of sheet metal and rushed us in. We paid the man, was given the standard "you have 1 hour and don't get seen by police" talk. One of the 3 guards took us to the back stairwell where he unlocked the metal gate, and up we went. So excited from the building anticipation that we had from a nearly all day quest to gain admission, we ran up the first 20 floors on pure adrenaline. The stairwell is nearly pitch black, only small bits of light find their way into the building where the rooms were never completed. Our goal was to make it to the top as fast as possible, enjoy the views, take photos, and then explore as many floors as we can on the way down with whatever time we had remaining. This plan proved to be the best choice. We reached the top in about 10 minutes at most. From there we took many photos, checked out the skyline from every which way we could, climbed on ledges that we shouldn't have and enjoyed the fruits of our persistence. With 15 minutes left to spare, we began our descent. We stopped at every floor, walking the rooms and checking out different bits of artwork adorning the crumbling walls. After 10 floors, we had seen pretty much all that could be seen aside from individual pieces of art that have been collecting over the last 22 years. All in all, this was one of the best adventures of my life and it comes highly recommended. Come with money, do NOT make a scene when entering the alleyway, or when speaking with the guard. If they say no, figure out what time you should come back. It may take a few days to get accepted so don't save this for the last day of your trip. The day prior to the climb, I went and scouted out the building before having a drink at the State Tower's 64th floor open-air Sky Bar, what "would have been" the Big Brother skyscraper to the Sathorn Unique Tower. In my scouting mission, I watched two people come out of the tower through the lifted sheet metal at 3pm. I also watched two guys try to crawl in after the two other had left. They were instantly turned away, and they accepted defeat that day on the last day of their trip to BKK.
