What to do and see in Sapporo, Hokkaido: The Best Transportation

May 18, 2021 Flossie Demartino

Probably best known for its eponymous beer, Sapporo—the capital of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island—has maintained the youthful and open atmosphere of the 1972 Olympic Winter Games, drawing international visitors for its annual Snow Festival and its world-famous ramen. Those seeking out the full diversity of Japanese cuisine will want to visit: a city with a ramen-inspired theme park is one that embraces and pampers foodies.

We were on a 7-day tour starting from Niseko, covering Hokkaido from west to east, ending in Kushiro. The tour was arranged by Hokkaido Treasure Island Travel in partnership with this taxi service. Mr Hide-san was our driver for the entire trip. Hide-san was extremely well-mannered, knowledgeable and professional during the trip. He also served as a tour guide, making all kinds of gestures to make our holiday as comfortable and informative as possible. We never waited in queue at all to check on the availability of places or buy tickets because he was always one step ahead in calling or acquiring the tickets. During the trip, we planned for a surprise birthday celebration for my father, Valentine's day flowers for our significant others and also a marriage proposal. The amount of synergy required for him to coordinate with the tour agent was immense but he delivered exceptionally. As the sole driver/tour guide on the ground, he was witty and meticulous and executed the plans perfectly. This involved hiding the birthday cake, Valentine's day flowers, recceing the proposal location, being our photographer and many other small details. As a result, our surprises went very well and we had a very smooth trip. He even surprised us with photos he printed of our group at each of the tour locations we visited. Because of him, Hokkaido will hold a very special place in our hearts. Would definitely recommend him to anyone visiting Hokkaido.

We have been operating macrobiotic restaurants for eight years in Tobetsu, Hokkaido. We have been doing foreign homestay since 15 years ago.  Our food is macrobiotic so-called vegan food, so even vegetarians can participate.  There is only one set of private lessons (family, friends, couples, etc.) once to create an atmosphere like a homestay. So you can enjoy it casually.I can not speak English very much, but I supplement it with the translation software of the smartphone.

Sapporo City Transportation (Tram)

The streetcar - tram -- is a great way to travel, as long as you are not in a hurry. The are are two loops, inner and outer. The tram will take you to the ropeway and Mt Moiwa. Just look for the 'inner' or 'outer' sign on the streetcar. You can also take the streetcar to the tram museum. You can get a discounted ticket for the combined streetcar and subway. By the way, if it's raining, the tram will lend you an umbrella. I've never heard of this before. The tram doesn't go as fast as a New Orleans streetcar, but it doesn't wobble as much, either.
