What to do and see in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato: The Best Archaeology Tours

February 16, 2022 Tynisha Seiler

High in the cool hills, this colonial gem of cobblestone streets and picturesque churches inspires artists with its color, character and light. Baroque, neoclassical and neogothic mix in the city's buildings, notably at the pink stone 18th-century church on the Plaza Principal. Founded in 1542, the city is a mix of Hispanic and Mesoamerican influences.

We had an amazing walking (with one taxi) food tour with Diego! My husband and I love exploring the local food culture and he took us to some great local markets we never would have been able to navigate on our own. We tried tacos, meats, fruits and other treats. At the places he picked he knew the owners. Diego even brought his own plates and silverware for us. He is really knowledgeable about the history of the food culture of San Miguel De Allende. He also went with us to the local craft market. All in all a great day!

Vail, our guide was terrific. We learned a lot about the history of San Miguel, and enjoyed all the restaurants we visited. Highlights were the shrimp and jicama tacos and the churros. I have some mobility problems due to a total knee replacement I had a few months ago, and she changed the itinerary to accommodate me. They even picked us up at our hotel and brought us back! My husband and I were the only ones on the tour, so they went out of their way to customize the experience. One piece of advice: go hungry!

Alberto Aveleyra has been doing research on the site since 2017, when he presented a paper about the prehispánic routes of access to the site in the 3rd International Congress of Ethnohistory. This year, 2021, an article where he shows his first research results is going to appear in a book about the Royal Road of Guanajuato. His research proposes that this site probably is the sanctuary of Chicomoztoc, a place referred in multiple indigenous historical sources, this discovery drove him to start a PhD in Mesoamerican studies in the National University of Mexico, he is now in the selection process, if he is succesful, he´ll start his degree in August 2021. The last 4 years of fieldwork and codex analysis have been founded through the tours he runs in the site. When you hire his tours you are contributing and supporting his research, creating a new way to do cultural anthropology in Mexico.

As I (Albert Coffee) guide you through this magical place, where I had the privilege of participating during the 2004 excavation field season, I'll share what I have gleaned through personal hands-on experience and years of study about ancient Mesoamerica, the legends & wisdom of local people. I am a graduate of Louisiana State University and a federally licensed tour guide. This special tour includes years of documented legends, wisdom & memories of the elders of the ranch communities on and around the historic location. You will hear about each place and its cultural significance as you journey along the path the ancients took to reach the pyramid. I have taken over 20,000 people on tours since the site opened to the public in 2011. My passion is relating in an enjoyable way information that is just coming to light in an area recently investigated. I hope to see you soon. This is "a must do while you’re here…!" "An experience that can’t be missed." "Don’t get left behind."

We will start our tour in San Miguel de Allende, and after a 30 minutes trip we'll get to Canada de la Virgen. There, we'll be taken by a small bus close to the pyramids, then we walk 1 kilometer (3,300 feet) to get there. The tour in the pyramids is walking and has a duration of two hours, including the bus shuttle. When we finish the tour, we walk back to the bus that will take us to our vehicle. We'll go to Rossana's place to have lunch made with local ingredients that have been used by the natives for hundreds of years, plus handmade tortillas and food made by local people who know how to mix all these ingredients to make a delicious meal. At the restaurant there is a small museum exhibiting photos, where we can have a better understanding about the relation between the pyramids in Canada de la Virgen with the sun and the moon. Did two tours with Aaron in Queretaro, the city walking tour and the wine and cheese tours. His english is excellent and his knowledge of the region and its history wonderful. He regaled us with stories of the history of the region, but was also a wealth of knowledge of the businesses and economic engines of the region. He drove us for the wine tour in his newish Nissan. He is a careful solid driver and we felt comfortable the whole day. We especially enjoyed the town of Bernal and the Freixenet winery. We felt very well cared for the entire time with Aaron. Would strongly recommend him and his tours and plan to come back one day to further explore the region.
