What to do and see in Ravello, Campania: The Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day

November 4, 2021 Sachiko Swiger

Three miles of twisty mountain roads up from Amalfi, the gorgeous resort of Ravello has been attracting celebrities for centuries, including Richard Wagner, Greta Garbo, Gore Vidal and D.H. Lawrence, who wrote Lady Chatterley’s Lover here. Ravello’s Duomo (Cathedral) and Villa Cimbrone (both 11th century) and Villa Rufolo (13th century) are all magnificent sights. The annual summer Ravello Festival began as a salute to Wagner’s music, but now showcases a wide range of music and arts.

Mamma Agata - Cooking Class

Reviewed By JoshuaGanim - Brisbane, Australia

What an adorable family! I heard about this world-famous cooking school in Ravello, on the hills of the picturesque coastline of the Amalfi Coast, that got the prestige because of the adorable, heart-warming Chiara, “the chatterbox”, and her husband Gennaro, “the super chef” by creating stunning, authentic Italian recipes passed down from Mamma Agata. Not only is the food to die for, but the energy of the experience is one of my life’s highlights. If you are planning on a trip there, this is an absolute must! But it books out, so be sure to book in advance. I think with Covid restrictions, you can only book for online classes currently. But when things lift, I've been twice and couldn't recommend anything more if you're visiting the area after an authentic feed. Delizioso!

We visited Ravello four years ago. Great selection and assistance at Cosmolena. Very friendly sales help. We had a serving platter and 6 mix-and-match dinner plates shipped to our home in Dallas. We have loved being reminded of our trip whenever we eat on the lovely plates. Over the next few years, we have ordered additional items remotely and had them shipped to us -- matching salad plates, matching bowls, and a patio table that is to-die-for. It all arrived expertly packed -- really some of the best packing of breakable items I have ever seen. Their website is helpful, but I have been most impressed with the back-and-forth with photos and options that has made our remote purchasing feel more personalized. We have loved our ongoing connection to Cosmolena and look forward to visiting Ravello in person again someday soon.

Villa Maria Cooking Class

Ideal for those who want to have, in one lesson, the basis to start giving the impression of a great cuisine to their dishes. The peculiarity, compared to the theoretical courses, is given by an active participation of the students in the preparation of the entire menu. The lesson begins in the organic garden, where the participants, together with the chef, harvest the vegetables that will then use in the preparation of dishes. Duration: 3 hours approx - Location: typical rustic kitchen. It includes the preparation and tasting of the menu with ¼ bottle of local wine and ½ mineral water

I bought the cookery class as a birthday present for my husband and it was an amazing experience which we will never forget. Vincenzo was a wonderful, friendly and knowledgeable teacher and we have left full of tips and tricks which we will use cooking back home. We had a hands on mozzarella making experience, then picked fresh ingredients from the incredible gardens before preparing our four course meal step by step. We had such a brilliant time and loved chatting to Vincenzo over our delicious meal about his fascinating past and passion for food and Ravello. Couldn’t recommend highly enough.

Duomo di Ravello

The Cathedral, built during the 11th century, consists of three naves, separatred by two colonnades, each of which is formed by eight coloumns of granite, transept and crypt. The famous bronze doors, made by Barisano from Trani using the relief-techinque, were given to the Cathedral in 1179 by Sergio Muscettola, an important member of the Ravello patriciate. The ambo of Epistle (12th Century)is marked by bizantine decorations and is decorated by mosaics representing the Giona's story, a symbol of the Death and Resurrection of Christ. The pulpit made by Nicola di Bartolomeo from Foggia in 1272 is a present of Nicola Rufolo. It rests on six twist coloums adorned with mosaics; the backs of six lions are the base of these coloums. It's richly adorned with mosaic slabs representing geometrical, animal and plant decorations. Th marble chapel of St. Pantaleone, patron of Ravello, was built during the 17th century to preserve the precious relic of the patrons's blood. The miracle of liquefaction dates from 1057 in Constantinople.

One of the most special entrances to a church ever seen are the rustic bronze doors dates back to 1179! You’ve got to go inside to visit the pulpit and the slanting floor.... goes uphill! A beautiful duomo to be seen
