Where to Eat in Ravello: The Best Restaurants and Bars

July 27, 2017 Giuseppe Pratt

Three miles of twisty mountain roads up from Amalfi, the gorgeous resort of Ravello has been attracting celebrities for centuries, including Richard Wagner, Greta Garbo, Gore Vidal and D.H. Lawrence, who wrote Lady Chatterley’s Lover here. Ravello’s Duomo (Cathedral) and Villa Cimbrone (both 11th century) and Villa Rufolo (13th century) are all magnificent sights. The annual summer Ravello Festival began as a salute to Wagner’s music, but now showcases a wide range of music and arts.

Vittoria was recommended by our hotel and heard very good comments from another traveler..
Overall the food and presentation were good.
Primi pasta with pumpkin was one of the best during our trip to Italy.
The second course of rack of lamb was overcooked.
We were not asked our preference and mistakenly assumed it would be similar to the Florentine steaks.

Garden Restaurant

On the wide Terrace on warm summer evenings or in a glass-walled dining room, the Garden's restaurant offers the best of regional cuisine. The style is unmistakable classic Italian and the accents are naturally local - the fishermen's "catch of the day" and the equally fresh produce of the hillside farms, citrus orchards, and artisan "butchers, bakers and pasta-makers".

We had read about this restaurant on TripAdvisor, so decided to see if we could get a table on the Terrace when we arrived at about 12.30. We got lucky as we were given a table overlooking the coast and, within five minutes, every table was full and people were waiting for a table to come free. The view from the table was just amazing - no wonder that it is a popular venue for weddings. There was a good selection of items on the menu. My husband had the ham with mozzarella for a starter and we could see them carving the ham from a large joint at a nearby table. I didn't order a starter but ended up helping him out as the portion was enormous with a couple of large slices of melon too. We then had sea bass served with green beans and a vegetable cannelloni - both were delicious. Not a cheap place to eat but not as expensive as we thought it might be and definitely worth it for its position. If you are in a hurry, service isn't fast but then it's nice to linger somewhere like this. The staff were friendly and welcoming.

We came here two nights consecutively, the first to celebrate a birthday. The staff was very attentive and did help to make the birthday celebration a great success. We brought with us a very old bottle of sauternes which the head sommelier Enzo opened with great care despite a very challenging cork. Of course we shared a taste with him (as is customary) and extended the tasting to the junior somm as well as the manager. They repaid the kindness with some complimentary 50 year old cognac for our entire table and they also surprised us with a custom made cake for the occasion which was very thoughtful.
Overall the team was positive and seemed to genuinely try to make us feel welcome and accommodate us. Two members of our party have some diet limitations and we had requested one dish, I believe it was soy, to be served with the sauce on the side. This request was overlooked as well as the request to have the main courses of all five of us served simultaneously though two of us ended up with their last course arriving in advance. I realize this is not a tragedy but we did find it a bit clumsy.
On the last night I received a bill with several errors on it and I was deeply offended by this. I believed the errors were intentional because of the circumstances surrounding them. In fact, I initially provided a much less positive review than the one you are Reading and had some ensuing email dialog with the hotel / restaurant ownership over the past few days. Being initially very upset I had extended my displeasure to that of the hotel which was unfair and so I apologized for this and have rewritten my review here (see my separate review of Palazzo Avino for my thoughts about this hotel).
At the same time, I remain skeptical that the errors were purely accidental. But even if I am completely wrong about the intentions, I think what I found most upsetting was the sort of casual response I received at the time. Enzo brushed off the 10 Euro wine error and the manager, Francesco pointed to the hostess as having mistakenly charged three of us for four courses rather than three tasting menus. Overall the price difference was nominal but for me it wasn’t the point. I felt as though they trivialized this detail and/or made excuses. The manager should have taken care to ensure the calculation of the final bill was correct and if he failed to do this, he should have apologized and taken the responsibility for the error, not pointed to someone else. I should not have been put in the position of having to question a bill in front of my guests. I expect much more care at a Michelin star restaurant and for the price and competition I believe this expectation to be very reasonable.
In my ensuing dialog with the hotel ownership the one thing that stands out to me is that they were much more concerned with my review on trip advisor than trying to alleviate what I deemed to be an offense. I received rational explanations regarding the errors (management did not present them as excuses) but not once did I actually receive an apology – not at the time of the incorrect bill nor subsequently from the management in any of our dialog.
When we came here three years ago then manager Donato was much more accommodating to special requests and in fact it was this special care that prompted us to dine three nights in a row (see my first review of this restaurant from spring of 2014). Putting aside my ill will about the bill, I feel as though the restaurant has moved toward nouveau dish preparation and has lost some of the understated elegance of the local cuisine that we found so charming on our first visit. Of course the food quality is still very good and, overlooking our specific issues, the service is pleasant if a little sloppy. Given time and the will of the ownership to improve I suspect they can.
I find myself unable to overlook the mishandled bill issue though I have tried and have done my best to present a fair perspective on the restaurant for readers here (including both the good and the bad). I am not discouraging the readers to try it but if you do give it a try, make sure any special requests are quite clear and ask the manager if he has personally reviewed the bill before you open it at a table of guests.

Visited this restaurant having read the reviews and was very disappointed.
In a nutshell, there was a limited menu, staff were lovely but I felt the chef must have been watching too many Food Network shows.
As a vegetarian I was expecting, from the reviews, there to be a selection of vegetarian dishes. There was one starter and one main course on the menu. When I asked if this was all, I was informed yes. No offer to do a simple pasta dish with say a tomato sauce or a pesto.
My husband ate seafood and said it was 'nice', the grouper was very good, small potion but tasty.
The meals were beautifully presented but tasted mostly mediocre. Nothing to remember them by except for the lack of food and overly complicated presentation.
Expensive for what it was.
Fantastic wine!

Atrani has a few restaurants around its small square that everybody sees, but walk a bit further up the main street under the clock tower/church until you reach this restaurant on the right hand side. Its easy to miss being set down a small low level entrance, particularly in the dark! Welcoming, wide range of dishes, a bit noisy but a great atmosphere. Its location and no outside dining or frontage probably stops many people finding it - don't be one of them :-)

My wife & I stumbled upon this restaurant for lunch during a day's visit to Ravello - we'd looked at a few places whilst wandering around, and the menu here was somewhere in the middle of the price ranges we'd seen, but with spectacular views to add.
The menu was varied, and read well - many innovative twists on the regional classics.
As some others have mentioned, there were lovely touches even before the "ordered" meal arrived, such as a palette cleanser of a small white chocolate sphere filled with a limoncello-esque mix (I appreciate this sounds odd, but really was a good start!), small bowl of melt-in-mouth gnocchi in a tomato broth, and home made crisp bread with an artistic design on it & served with an olive oil foam.
Our mains meal of ceviche, tagliatelle with tuna carpaccio, and stewed beef were all delicious.
Food tastes are always a personal thing, but I felt this was a high quality restaurant for the price we paid.
I felt the service was fine too - I wouldn't say the staff were hugely attentive, but they were knowledgeable about the food, polite, and efficient - what more do you need?!
Would definitely recommend eating here.

We came here the first time because it was located right next to the apartment where we were staying. We didn't expect much, because our apartment was off the tourist area. We were very pleasantly surprised! Service was excellent, and so was the food. My spaghetti carbonara was so good I had it the second time we came here also. The bruschetta, which doesn't vary a great deal from restaurant to restaurant, was very good and very reasonable. My husband got the spaghetti puttanesca once, and a fish plate the second time we visited. This is a good restaurant for the money, and is away from the crazy Duomo area. Just follow the main road past the little stone village, and keep going until you're almost at the Paper Museum (also a good place to visit.)

It’s been over a month since I’ve been back from Italy but I didn’t want to forget writing about the favourite dinner from our trip that we ended up having twice! The lemon pesto pasta was such an incredible and delectable flavour combination that my friends and I still talk about it, and the gnocchi can only be described as airy pillows of goodness. The food was so good that the next afternoon when we were strolling around Amalfi, we decided that instead of trying another restaurant we should immediately make another reservation at Apostoli; and we did! It’s also such a lovely cozy Terrace right next to the church, and Sarah our waitress was absolutely one of the nicest people we met, full of warmth and great recommendations on what we should order; thank you Sarah and come back to Canada soon! ;-)

I can't say enough great things about this amazing restaurant, which was highly recommended by a friend. We dined on the Terrace high above the Amalfi coast, taking in the most dazzling and spectacular view of the sea below. The service was excellent, the food was delicious, and most mind boggling of all, the prices were remarkably, astonishingly affordable! We did a double take when the check arrived. We paid a mere €27 per person-- including wine, cocktails, and gratuity-- for the most delicious, generous five course meal we've enjoyed in ages. I still can't believe the low price for the superb quality of food we enjoyed. We had the cuttlefish salad, pasta with mussels, scorfano main, mixed vegetable salad, and classic Caprese almond and lemon cake in white chocolate sauce. The entire experience was unforgettable.

Ristorante Pizzeria Giardiniello

Since 1955, a tasty history Inside the narrow streets, through the Moorish streets and all the little squares near the sea, Minor collects the scents and flavors of it are cooking traditions. Here, let us not forget, was produced handmade pasta, which became, later, the undisputed asset of other areas of our region. And in this tradition theGiardiniello Restaurant was born. A story that began back in 1955 with Francesco Di Bianco and Annunziata "Nunziatina" Celio. Their hospitality and taste have grown for many years then passed, in more recent times, their sons Antonio and Giovanni, who made "Giardiniello" one of the true germs of good food on the Amalfi Coast.
