Sugar cane, Chocolate and coffee Tour The first trapiche (sugarmill) came to Monteverde in 1948 when Mr. Higinio Santamaría (grandfather of the present owner), moved from San Ramon of Alajuela to Monteverde. The journey was done with oxen carts, to thearea we know now as Santa Elena and lasted about 15 days, then it was installed and started working regularly. Approximately 13 years after the arrival of the family to Monteverde, Mr. Juan Santamaría Campos (father of the present owner) creates a partnership buying a diesel-powered mill. The idea of turning it in to an agro-tourism farm, was created with the aim of showing to visitors a representative part of Costa Rican culture where they can appreciate the process of sugar by the old way making brown sugar (tapa de dulce) and processing of fresh coffee cultivation in educational and cultural tour, which began on 2005.

We booked an early morning tour with Oscar since we wanted to be out early to see the birds when they are still active in the morning. Due to some issues with tripadvisor our reservation did not go through fully to Oscar and i basically called him out of the blue 30 minutes after our tour was supposed to start. He offered me a full refund or that he would rush to the park to meet us and do the tour, we opted for the latter luckily. Oscar is a great guide who is not only knowledgeable but also cares for the wildlife and will help you respect it more too. We saw the quetzal like we hoped for and a range of other birds as well (toucanet was my wife's favorite). After the tour as an apology for having us wait he offered us some refreshments at the cafe nearby at the hummingbird feeders where we had a couple of koati's come very close to us, like in touching range close, it was awesome!

This tour is a unique experience which provides visitors with a true cultural understanding. Our philosophy was born from our local Monteverde family who wanted to give clients an exclusive excursion different than conventional tours. We aim to provide our clients with a extraordinary experience by fully immersing them in this vibrant culture. This tour begins with a walk to a hidden Strangler Fig Tree, where there is an option to climb inside of it. Here, we have the chance to meet Capuchin White Face monkeys and Howler monkeys, who are both frequent visitors to the area. After spending time at the tree, we will go towards the upper part of the mountains, passing the original central town of Monteverde. This is where the Quakers settled in the 1950s and founded the cheese factory as well as the Quaker school. We will then catch a ride to an organic coffee farm in the bordering town of San Luis.

Highly recommend! This was one of the best parts of our trip. The views were stunning. The guides were friendly. We enjoyed being able to go at full gallop at times. It made it more exciting than the Extreme Zipline parks we had done earlier in the day. We were treated to a bonus sugar cane tour with a hands on experience at the end.

I did 2 Tours with them, with 2 different Tourguides and can highly recommend it! The first one was in the morning at Curi-Cancha Reserve, where we saw a Quetzal, different types of Hummingbirds, Howlermonkeys and a lot more. The Curi Cancha Reserve itself is very beautyful and quiet, i went there again in the afternoon for a long walk and would definately go again. The Nighttour was at the Wildlife Refuge Monteverde, where i saw a Slot, Scorpions, a Salamander, Snakes and Birds, such an experience, a musst do while in Monterverde! I had so much fun, they really do a great Job!

Booked in person @ the Jaco office. The rep was friendly & helpful. Pickup @ our Jaco rental was on time. Very short & comfortable drive to the marina. Waiver process was straight forward & received a copy by email. The catamaran had an enclosed glassed-in seating area with A/C, a ten person upper deck with seating, a back seating area & standing areas @ the sides. From the start, Tom & his crew were focused on superior customer satisfaction & safety. The 45 minute trip by water was pleasant. Food & drinks were served. No rowdies on this trip & everybody had fun. Demographics were diverse which was good. The island has a beautiful beach & swimming area & it didn’t feel crowded. Snorkeling was fun with lots of variety in fish to see. Lunch was delicious with seconds available for those who wanted them. The trail up the mountain was well marked & the views were spectacular. The trip back was relaxing & crew kept up their attention to their customers. Tip - the hike up the mountain is not for those who have trouble getting around.
