Area Archeologica di Saepinum

Well preserved ruined Saepinum is a good example of a Roman provincial town. Originally established by the Samnites, it was conquered by the Romans in 293 BC and flourished in the first two centuries AD.
Today this walled town retains three of its four original gates, it two main roads, as well as the marketplace, the forum, basilica and theatre.
There is no entrance fee and the place is hardly ever overcrowded; it's a great outing for couples and families.

The best kept old Italian city I have seen yet, absolutely charming, people friendly, great restaurants, great bars, unusual shops, really lovely there. Wonderful 6th century Cathedral and great hotels, we stayed at Locanda Alfieri which was superb. I would go back tomorrow if I could.

Cattedrale di Termoli

This was the venue for our daughter's and now son-in-law's wedding mass. The temperatures outside were very high and although the church was a little hot with all the people, it was very cool inside by comparison.
Beautiful service, wonderful occasion in this central venue of the old city. The atmosphere was quite spectacular.
We had visited the Cathedral beforehand and the history associated with it was very interesting.

We ended up in Termoli because we wanted to see the Adriatic Sea and there was a nice Airbnb. It's just a very beautiful, clean, well kept up town. We loved it there. However, very few people spoke much English. They kept asking, what are you doing here? how did you hear about Termoli. We looked it up (after we got there) according to Wiki it's become a resort area for Italian families. We felt we were able to witness traditional Italian family interactions. The Sunday evening walk about town was so lovely. So many families, children, elderly, extremely well dressed and others not so, all walking together, chatting, smoking, having a meal or drinks at street side cafes. I want to go back.

Antiquarium di Saepinum-Altilia

This Roman town, built on a pre-existing Samnite settlement is little known but the Italian public, let alone by foreign torurists. And yet it is well worth a visit. The ruins include all of the original four gates (you can climb onto the battlements of one of them), a very well preserved theatre, the forum (with a very beautiful foutain), the basilica and many other buildings. Spend a morning or an afternoon at this very tranquil (and decidedly uncrowded) site and conclude your visit with a hearty meal at the restaurant next to the main gate (it specialises in lamb). What surprises me is that there is no entry charge. What a pity; this could help the authorities provide some more information about what you see.

This is an informative, well organized and above all interesting small museum on a hidden pedestrian side street in Campobasso. The exhibits almost all have detailed and clear English explanations describing the relevance of the artifacts. There is no entry fee. The museum occupies a large 3 story villa and is very bright, airy and open. It focuses mostly on the story of the Samnites through displays of many 2000+ year old artifacts found in the province. Well done. Worth a visit if you are nearby.
