Fado na Baixa

We produce and take to the stage unique presentations of Coimbra and Lisbon's Fado with impeccable technical and artistic quality. In our live music auditorium, located in a street overlooking the Douro River and the historic area of Ribeira, we bring to life live fado performances that allow our visitors, not only to listen, but also to get to know Fado’s history and essence. We daily present the show “Mine. Unique. Fado.”, during which some emblematic Fado themes are played live, along with segments of a short documentary, translated in English, Spanish and French, which revisits, through testimonies of figures tightly associated with this musical genre, some of the key moments in the history of Fado, designated, in 2011, Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The live fado interpretation is assured by credited musicians, with verified curriculum in the instrumental and vocal areas of Fado, who give Fado in the exact measure of what they receive: everything.

Fado in Porto - Caves Calem

Fado in Chiado is a live Fado show – an excellent way to discover culture and the city.Fado is Portuguese and was born in Lisbon. It was adopted by Portuguese culture and is now a symbol of Portugal, with a strong tradition in the historic districts of Lisbon. The hour-long Fado in Chiado show features talented artists – a singer and two musicians (Portuguese guitar and classical guitar) – performing Fado and the music that makes it the national song. The live performances are accompanied by images of unique must-visit locations in Lisbon. It is said that Fado combines nostalgia (saudade), Portuguese pride, hope and conformism in a musical style epitomised by Amália Rodrigues. On account of these unique characteristics, Fado has now been declared part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.Fado in Chiado takes place daily* in the very centre of Lisbon. The hour-long show is the ideal suggestion for seeing live Fado and then taking advantage of the night to discover more of the city.

we saw 4 very talented musicians who put on a great show: a Portuguese Guitar player, a classical guitar player, and a male and a female Fado singer. The show was about 40 minutes, I wish it could have gone on longer!

Very atmospheric by candlelight in a cellar. Not the easiest to find - it is where googlemaps says but its through a shop - but a very small intimate atmosphere. The difference between Lisbon and Coimbra styles was explained, although the performance was of Lisbon Fado. No tech stuff, no fancy films or audio - just three very enthusiastic performers face to face with a small audience.

Casa da Musica

Casa da Musica was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music - to the presentation and public enjoyment of music, to music education and to the creation of music. The project took shape in 1999 after the Rem Koolhaas & Ellen van Loon - Office for Metropolitan Architecture won the international architectural competition. Work began in 1999 on the site of Porto's former central tram garage on the Rotunda da Boavista, and Casa da Musica opened its doors to the public on April 15th , 2005. Casa da Musica was planned as a home for all types of music and it is not only part of the urban redevelopment of Porto but also part of a network of cultural facilities, for the city of Porto and for the wider world. Underlying it is an innovative and wide-ranging cultural project, which aims to make an exciting contribution to the national and international music scene, as an arena for all types of musical events - from classical music to jazz, from fado to electronic music, from great international productions to more experimental projects. Besides concerts, recitals and other types of performance, Casa da Musica also organises events for musicians and musicologists and invests in research into the origins of Portuguese music. In addition, it plays a very important role in music education. It is a cultural meeting point between music and other areas of artistic creation and knowledge, providing a space for all kinds of audiences and creators.

I went to a guided tour in English on Saturday 16 2019. The guide showed us around and explained every detail of this intriguing building. It was 10 euros but in my opinion it is worth it.
