April 5, 2022 Jana Sager

The bubbling, turquoise crystalline pools of Plitvice Lakes National Park comprise one of Croatia's most popular tourist destinations. Just a two-hour drive from Zagreb, the national park offers 50 acres of forest and lake. In winter, it's a wonderland of frozen waterfalls. In summer, the park is lush with greenery. Wooden walkways and hiking trails traverse the porous karst limestone. This World Heritage Site is a veritable wildlife haven, home to everything from birds to boars and even bears.

Maja and I met at 9am, and I was the only person booked for the day. I’m normally terrified of having to talk to someone for excessively long periods of time but literally I could not soak up enough information; she knew everything (it seemed!) about the history of Croatia, the Pltivice lakes and surrounding areas, about coffee and food and the best museums and why the travertine grew and why the lakes were a UNESCO site and what a UNESCO site is anyway. At one point I asked her why the trees on the highway were cut the way they were AND SHE KNEW THAT TOO. The visit was gorgeous and one of the most incredible experiences I’ve had in real life; I do believe this is the best Croatia can offer because I think it’s the best any country could hope to offer. I said wow over a hundred times. I cannot recommend this company, or Maja, enough, truly.

Budget Transfer provided a personalized, throughly planned, well thought-out six day trip. They are far more than just a "transfer" company. Dražen (as driver) and Rafaella (as guide) were with me every step of the way, answering questions and being great travel companions. :) Rafaella was knowledgeable on so many subjects: Croatian history, current life in Croatia, and she was truly a pleasant and educational personality throughout all situations. My desires were fully taken into account, and I never felt led to do what the company might benefit from (as is often the case with guided tours) - everything was fully customized to what I wished to do & see. And where I chose to leave the details up to them, they were completely handled, with ease. I requested a tour covering a lot of ground and wanted to see many cities, and that we did! We kept moving and I saw so much more than I ever could have on my own. All the tickets, ferries, and timing was perfectly planned. From my very first emails with Biljana, I was impressed with the organization and thoroughness of Budget Transfer's planning. They went above and beyond to answer all my questions. I highly recommend Budget Transfer Croatia, for any length or type of trip. They can provide just what you're looking for, whatever that may be. And, with a friendly smile and a personal touch!

Arriving at Plitvice You will have free time to visit park. The path takes you across Gornja Jezera (Upper Lakes), and then it's time for a magical boat ride within the sound of the waterfalls to Donja Jezera (Lower Lakes). Wherever you are in Pltivice's it's easy to see why its travertine marble formations are such an extraordinary natural phenomenon. The barriers, sills and other forms created in these lakes, karst rivers and streams is still an ongoing process that shapes the wonderful landscapes that make your walk through the park so enjoyable. Its these same travertine formations that have and are still creating the numerous magnificent waterfalls here. Over time, the water changes its course, leaving some barriers dry as it deposits new layers elsewhere. The best way to actually see this happening is when you are standing in front of the Great falls, 78 meters high, The roaring thunder of the water as it hits the ground is unforgettable!

Plitvice Lakes are a full day tour but be sure that they are the most beautiful thing in Croatia. We have 8 national parks and this is the only one protected by the UNESCO. I always like to point out that it is not a „picnic destination“ – we are not in a single spot, we are constantly walking (at least 6 km) and exploring many small and big waterfalls. After the tour we can make a stop in one of the local restaurants in the area. Contact us and let’s have a nice day together :)
