What to do and see in Playa Blanca, Canary Islands: The Best Free Things to do

August 14, 2021 Sachiko Swiger

"Playa Blanca" means "white beach," and indeed, travelers flock here to swim and sunbathe. Huge yachts bob up and down at the marina, where you'll also find many shops and restaurants and a lively market. TripAdvisor travelers say Montana Roja is not "particularly strenuous" and offers amazing views from the top.

We have been to Puerto del Carmen for 20 years for music and our first trip to Playa Blanca. Thankfully Barneys stepped up to the mark to give some excellent nights. Barney appears with guests most nights and each brings some thing different and all excellent musicians, so seems like a new act each evening. Best was the girl who played guitar and sang, who was amazing, not sure of her name. One Saturday night Barney wasn't on and the guy playing was very average playing to backing tapes, but when Barney is on the music is good. Drinks very cheap at 3 euro a pint and baileys about 5e. Best music bar in PB by a long way.

This is a very modern Marina but it is very well laid out and well designed so it has a good deal of charm about it. Pleny and varied dining options, a little more upmarket than most other places in Playa Blanca. it has a nice arts and craft market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings

Montana Roja

Reviewed By 501suelyf - Dublin, Ireland

Montaña Roja was our favourite spot in our trip to Lanzarote. At the feet of our hotel, we climbed twice, both for sunrise and sunset, both worth the climb. It's an easy climb, everybody with a minimal effort can do it and it takes less than 30 minutes if you are a bit fit. You can park the car close to Montaña Baja and then find the trail at the feet of the mountain and start your way up. From up there you have amazing views of Playa Blanca and Fuerteventura just in front of you and also Papagayo Bay with its beautiful beaches. The crater is easily reachable and you can walk around it or go to the middle as well. Awesome for a quiet spot to see the beautiful sunrise or the amazing sunset. Its pretty windy up there, so bring a jacket if you plan to stay a bit longer. Totally worth the climb and the best part is that is for free and Mother Nature really rewards your efforts with tremendous views of the landscapes around the island! If you have an hour to spear, just go and enjoy!

Playa Flamingo

Two man-made water breaks provide for a very calm and sheltered bay which make this beach very suitable for children. So suitable in fact that the resort directly behind the beach is the TUI Family Life Resort. As you can guess the beach is packed with families and children. If you are ok with this then you will have a great time. There are a good range of restaurants and cafes directly behind the beach on the Paseo Maritima which caters for everyones refreshment requirements. The promenade (Paseo Maritima) that backs onto the beach is very uneven and is in dire need of resurfacing. We saw a number of families with buggies having difficulty in manoevering across said surface.
