St Peter's & St Paul's Church

The mediaeval church of St Peter and St Paul sits at the heart of the North Yorkshire market town of Pickering. The church is best known for its collection of 15th century wall paintings - regarded as one of the most complete sets of mediaeval wall paintings in England - and the fascinating story of their rediscovery in the 19th century. The church is home to a large and active congregation which continues to meet here daily for the worship of God. Visitors are welcome between 9am and 5pm each day.

St Peter's and St Paul's Church has the best medieval wall paintings I've ever found in Britain, and as such a visit is a must for anyone interested in churches or medieval art. It also has an interesting tomb effigy of a 14th c knight, Sir William Bruce.

Chimney Bank Mines

For the part time "strolling" walker, this track provides a wonderful intro into the beautifully stark North Yorkshire Moors. Breathtaking is an oft used word, but still applies. You will stroll past the old Rosedale Ironwork calcining kilns and along the disused rail track from the ironstone mines. you can walk as far as you wish along an even path, with only sheep for company and views out over the moors and then down into the verdant valley below. Very relaxing! If you wish to lift the blood pressure back up again, then take the steep incline drive down to Rosedale Abbey after your stroll.

Pickering Castle

Set in the attractive Moors-edge market town of Pickering; discover how this splendid 13th century castle was used throughout the centuries. This tourist attraction in the heart of the North York Moors National Park has been a royal hunting lodge, holiday home and a stud farm by a succession of medieval kings. Today, it gives spectacular views from the top of the keep, and features wildflower meadows and unique wildlife to discover alongside the castle's centuries-old story. Please note: Pickering Castle is now closed for the winter. See you again April 2020!

Lovely day for my sister to use her new english heritage membership, and it was great place for a walk around, great views of surrounding area, small car park that we were lucky and got a space. The lady at the desk was really lovely and to cap it all we could taste a lot of the bottles of alcohol that they sell, which was very nice. Overall a nice place to visit.
