Pavia (Italian: [paˈviːa] ( listen); Lombard: Pavia; Latin: Ticinum; Medieval Latin: Papia) is a town and comune of south-western Lombardy, northern Italy, 35 kilometres (22 miles) south of Milan on the lower Ticino river near its confluence with the Po. It has a population of c. 73,000. The city was the capital of the Kingdom of the Lombards from 572 to 774.

Whilst the Duomo was a bit of a let down, San Michel mad up for it. It is difficult to describe how beautiful this ancient basilica is. Just marvel at the outside before stepping in and being blown away. Loved it!!!!! To bad there was no guided tour.

An absolute must-not miss. Frescos and architecture are quite unique. Opening hours are a bit tricky. Crashing into weddings ceremonies on Saturdays is definitely an option -despite politeness may be needed.

It took us a little while to find San Pietro, because we walked right past it! From the Duomo, you carry on straight ahead past the Torre Civica in the direction of the castle (away from the river). You then cross a main road with a grassy, tree covered island in the middle. On the other side you head straight over on the Via Griziotti in the direction of a car park. At this point you may notice an impressive building to the right, flags flying - and it was here we went wrong, continuing to the car park ahead. The church is joined onto the building on the right (the Carabinieri), at right angles to it - it's pretty inconspicuous from the outside apart from a Dante quote next to the door. Inside it's another matter - the first thing you see is the huge altarpiece marking St Augustine's tomb. The crypt below is a very special, spiritual place that also houses the tomb of the philosopher Boethius. To the left there is a room with an elaborately decorated roof housing a shop selling holy pictures etc, that is run on an honesty basis.

Pavia importance as religious, agricultural and industrial hub has been downsized over the years and it has became essentially an university town. The ancient university is located in the center of town and it is still used for some teaching, formal events, awarding of degrees and houses a large number of small museums for science, literature and medicine. It is a very large complex of many courtyards occupying several city blocks. Equally interesting are the beautiful colleges, in particular the Borromeo College, which still houses students in beautiful buildings at a walking distance.

We were recommended this by work colleagues so paid a visit. The original bridge was bombed by the allies in world war 2 so the new version was built after the war. You can still see some of the old bridge. It's a good looking bridge and is unusual in that it has a roof all the way along.

Lovely facade of this beautiful old church nestled in the old town centre.
Quite relaxing atmosphere even around it in this nice square where lots of restaurants surround the square.
All in all it has been a good surprise and in my opinion a beautiful architecture mastepiece.

The most famous square of the city, in the center of the old town. Aesthetically beautiful, entirely pedestrian area. Surrounded by historical buildings and an equally beautiful gallery of arcades, along which there are numerous bars and restaurants.
Here around this square there are many other attractions, including the Cathedral and the palace Broletto. The best of this place is to sit at one of the tables and enjoy a good drink in this beautiful view.

had the chance to attend a service there: even better with illumination, songs and organ. Check out the outer surroundings, authentic and much better than an overly rebuilt monument.
