What to do and see in Oxford, England: The Best Food & Drink

November 22, 2021 Janette Largent

In the "city of dreaming spires," academia takes center stage. Gaze out at Oxford's world-famous university from the top of Carfax Tower before heading into the city's pedestrian-friendly streets. Follow your nose to the Covered Market for the makings of a picnic to enjoy at Headington Hill Park. Mix the historic and modern with visits to the 12th-century village church of Iffley and trendy Cowley's ethnic shops and music venues.

What a lovely surprise to find we have such an amazing distillery in Oxford. Was bought this as my Mother’s Day present from my youngest son, hubby came to. We got the bus from central oxford to within a 3 minute walk. Easy, no hassle and at the top of South Park looking across beautiful views of Oxford. We could have been collected by minibus free of charge if we wanted. Greeted by Edward and Ruth who made us one of our first of many G&T’s all made at TOAD Great tour, nice to see how it all started and where it’s going, funny, witty and the 2 hours passed by too quickly Taken back into Oxford by minibus with lots of goodies we tasted throughout the tour. Not just gin but vodka and whiskey ???? Would definitely go back again ????

The Oxford Wine Cafe - Summertown

Here at The Oxford Wine Cafe we aim to bring you wines with a focus on the smaller boutique style producers who are making wine with real passion. We have a wide range of wines available by both the glass and the bottle. Our by the glass selection changes frequently thereby keeping our list fresh and giving you maximum choice and the chance to get to know many different wine styles. All our wines are served out of the very best Riedel glassware to give you the tasting experience that you deserve. Why drink a great wine out of an inferior glass? Top glassware is created to deliver different styles of wine to the right part of your palate to give maximum pleasure - and, let's face it - that's what wine is all about. We run regular tastings that feature many well known winemakers and MWs but these are never formal events - they are designed to be accessible to everyone, whatever their interests in wine may be. Theo's Tasty Tuesday tastings take place once a month and are especially designed to be a humorous introduction to the world of wine - it's a great way to have a laugh and learn about wine. We offer a very special 15% discount off all wines tasted at these events. "It's like having a bit of Ronnie Scott's jazz club in your own sitting room," one cafe customer said about our free Sunday night jazz sessions and that's the kind of feel we're aiming for. Relaxed seating, delicious wine, coffee and deli-snacks on hand, candle lit ambiance and fabulous jazz performances from internationally acclaimed trios. A wide variety of styles makes sure there's something for everyone.

Tried out the new brunch menu. A refreshing take on brunch, we arrived to a light and airy relaxed atmosphere, people drinking coffee and reading the paper. You won’t find any eggs or bacon on this new healthy brunch. But don’t think you are missing out! Started with a glass of bubbles as a treat before the food arrived. Our super antioxidants packed smoothie bowl, was beautifully presented and tasted great the granola crunch balanced it perfectly. Followed by our selection of toast with various topping, the berry and goats cheese was my favourite tart and sweet at the same time but they all were incredible and very filling! Service was great, very attentive. And every table had fresh flowers on (which is a must for me!) If brunch isn’t your thing they have crossiants and coffee to! I will be back- in the day time now to! Also drinking wine and spirits in the evening is fabulous to, and now you can come back in the morning to cure the hangover!

Well what can I say.... Fab, fab, fab! We had a ladies night out last night to ThecMad Hatter, and we couldn’t have asked for more! Right from the outset when we made first contact to ask about availability, they couldn’t have been more helpful! They went out of their way to accommodate us, after we were let down by the cancellation of a planned event to another venue - First class correspondence in a very timely fashion. When we arrived, we were greated by a wonderful venue, with very lovely and knowledgeable staff - The mixologist that we had to show us how to make cocktails was first class! She certainly knew her stuff and was really lovely. We had such a great night - The decor is fantastic, ambiance - superb, and music played that you can bop to all night long! Thank you SO, SO much for such a wonderful night and for all of your help in getting it set up - We are already planning on coming back!
