The best small museum - with information centre, gallery, shop, library all under one roof to give visitors to The Catlins the best start to their visit.
Definitely view the movie and check the toilets out - you'll see what I mean when you have been there.
Good displays and interesting memorabilia.
Exception - the geological section needs to be related and fixed up (and they are aware of it).
Check the shop - you might just find something nice.

There is a good amount of parking, but it can get busy. For those who like geocaching, there are 3 easy to get points on the walk. The signs say to keep children close as it is dangerous, but there are good fences later in the walk. Make sure you keep looking down to the water's edge as we watched sea lions playing in the water and basking in the rocks.

Worth checking out but highly recommend binoculars if you have them as you cannot go on the beach through the warmer months & can only view them from the “hide” building on the mountain.
There’s apparently 14 or so penguins in the bay who live in harmony with some seals, you may see a couple but it’s not uncommon to be there an hour or two without seeing anything.
In Jan/Feb you’re best going 3-6pm to see them coming back from a days hunting.
Wear closed in shoes as the dirt road is quite steep to walk down.

We visited Surat Bay on a nice sunny Autumn day via the dune walk from Cannible Bay, which is the neighbouring bay to the north. Nice views to the south, with golden sand stretching as far as the eye could see. Didn't see any sealions, they all seemed to be at Cannible Bay.

We went for a one hour trek. We had a mix of beginner riders and some with more experience and Cara was fantastic at making sure everyone felt safe and comfortable including matching the right horse to the right person. During the trek she also told us interesting facts and information about the history of the area. Beautiful scenery with views of the beach, forest and hills. Would highly recommend.

Enjoyed the detour to visit these Waterfalls. Not so much water flowing over the falls due to dry conditions. Would be more impressive after rain no doubt. Nice walk through the forest to visit the falls. We personally found Maclean falls (nearby) to be more impressive.

Plenty of free parking off the road. A nice easy walk to the falls, both the Matai and the Horseshoe falls, with the latter being just a short walk upstream. Nice native forest with lots of bellbirds and tui singing. We visited in April and it had been quite dry so there wasn't much water going over the falls, nevertheless and enjoyable walk. Allow yourself about 45mins for the full return trip incl photos etc.

Take the time to complete the journey and to stop at the bush walks, cafes and Beaches. Some truly spectacular walks and scenes. Have you insect repellent and sun screen handy. Weather can be hot or windy and cold - be prepared for it all. Get out and see the sights, regardless of the weather. Be warned - if it’s hot - burn time can be 8 minutes!
