What to do and see in Obidos, Central Portugal: The Best Things to do Good for Big Groups

September 6, 2021 Matilde Konrad

When 13th-century Portuguese Queen Isabel passed through Obidos and marveled at its beauty, her husband King Denis I simply gave it to her. For centuries after, the kings of Portugal followed suit, presenting the picturesque little town to their queens as a wedding gift. With its white buildings shining as brightly now as then, the walled city of Obidos is very popular with tourists, its hillside location offering amazing views of the Estremadura area. The medieval castle is a main attraction.

Igreja de Santa Maria

Lovely church. On the outside, it's not that glamorous, but on the inside, it's very beautiful. The church was built in 1148 and rebuilt in the following centuries. It was built on the remains of a mosque which in turn was built on the ruins of a Visigothic temple. The current structure has a Renaissance style. Its interior is distinguished by a painted wooden ceiling and tiles from the 17th century. It was in this temple that the future King Afonso V, then 10 years old, married his cousin Isabel, who was 8 years old. Its surroundings are very picturesque with the square it presides over and the adjoining buildings. A must see in Obidos.

This was our second visit to the amazing and beautiful village of Obidos. Should be the top of everyone’s list of places to visit if touring or holidaying in this area. You can walk right around the village on the castle walls, enjoying the fab views from lots of different vantage points, then enjoy the gorgeous narrow streets of this old Moorish village. Truly stunning.

We were going to visit Sintra but our hotel didn't work out as planned so we stayed at Obidos instead. The Castle is stunning and so well preserved. Even if you don't stay at the Castle Hotel, you are still able to wander around the whole place. The views from the castle walls are beautiful and you can order drinks from the bar to sit and have at tables positioned along the walls to take in the atmosphere and history The village within the walls is very pretty with lots of little restaurants and cafes. Very busy summer and winter with tourists though.

Beautiful main entrance to the village. You will see in when entering the medieval village and you will love it. Een hele mooie hoofd ingangspoort met ceramiek. Je ziet het bij als je het stadje ingaat. Het is heel mooi.

This is the main street. It is possible to drink Ginja, see local artists producing pottery, buy local handcraft, little souvenirs or beautiful jewels. I recomend walking this street up and down to check everything the lovely shops offer.
