One of the big three Hokkaido lantern festivals, this festival is held every year for two days on the fourth Friday and Saturday of August. The main attraction is the parade of yotaka andon lanterns, featuring lanterns of various sizes, with the largest being 7mx12mx3m. Yotaka andon are colorful, glorious lanterns made with bamboo in the shapes of dragons, carriages, and other forms, set up on pedestals, with light bulbs shining through glued and waxed Japanese paper. Contests for best lanterns are held including a stunning nighttime lantern fight (giant lanterns collide into one another).
