What to do and see in Northern Portugal, Portugal: The Best Literary, Art & Music Tours

November 19, 2021 Sachiko Swiger

Brimming with both history and natural wonder, Northern Portugal is home to Porto, the city that gave the country its name, as well as the important ancient town of Braga. Also here is Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park, a gorgeous wilderness area of mountains, gorges, water features and wildlife. Many picturesque villages and manor houses dot the countryside. Two areas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Alto Douro Wine Region, and the Paleolithic rock art in the Côa Valley.

Went on this tour last October, and had a wonderful experience! Silvia was our guide and she was so amazingly sweet and thoughtful. We travelled with a french couple and she literally explained everything in two languages: French and English. Not only is that extremely nice, I can only imagine the energy that takes :) The whole experience of driving through Douro, the wines, the people we spoke to and the delicious wines we could taste: would definitely recommend. This beautiful house is located inside São Roque Park and it is surrounded by its own garden, full of camellia's trees. Although the house was renovated, I only visited the exterior once the expensive tickets to see the inside area costs 7 Euros. It worth the visit and have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine in the private house garden surrounded by the camellias.

We had a very interesting and entertaining walking tour through the old town of Porto to get not only information on the highlights and the history of the town but also on the coolest places to enjoy the gastronomy and the nightlife scene. We enjoyed the tour all the way through to the end. The visit to the most beautiful book store of the World was a stunning experience. Our local guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. He guided us professionally through the old town which was packed with mostly Iberian tourists celebrating a long weekend city trip in Porto.

This was a brilliant day out visiting different wineries and port houses in the Douro Valley. We liked all the places we visited and learned a lot about the history and methods of port and wine making. We loved the river trip and lunch in a small town restaurant. It was great to get out into the countryside and be chauffeured around without worrying about anything. Our guide was really charming and knowledgeable – we asked a lot of questions about all sorts of topics and he was very willing to have a good conversation and seemed to know everything. The other people on our tour were lovely and we actually met some of them in town and had a drink a couple of days later.
