What to do and see in Nordland, Northern Norway: The Best Art Galleries

March 26, 2022 Marlin Saiz

Typified by steep mountains and the flat lowlands where they meet the Norwegian Sea, Nordland is known for its stunning scenery. The Lofoten Islands off the mainland are considered among the world's best for travelers and include unique attractions like the Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg. Saltstraumen near Bodo has the world's strongest tidal current. Further south, Vega has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its age-old lifestyle of fishing and eider duck down harvesting.

Galleri Lofoten

Gallery Lofoten has Norway’s largest collection of paintings from Northern Norway dating back to the turn of the last century – a period by many called the golden age of North Norwegian painting. On the gallery’s ground floor you find a collection of paintings by renowned artists like Otto Sinding, Gunnar Berg, Even Ulving, Adelsteen Normann, Einar Berger, Ole Juul, Thorolf Holmboe and others. The gallery’s first floor is divided into two sections – one exhibiting watercolours by Lars Lerin and one exhibiting pictures and ceramic works by Her Majesty Queen Sonja. In the gallery shop you find a selection of art books, postcards, and posters by the exhibition’s artists. In our café you may enjoy a glass of wine and a cheese platter from the local cheese producer Aalan Farm.

a stunning aspect of this venue is how close you can get to the art and artifacts, the underground museum collection that is wide open to individual wandering... Harald Bodøgaard is generous in making this place open and available for events, as well as opening the art gallery. I have only been here for events, birthdays, confirmation, weddings, special concerts and organizational dinners, but each time has been inspiring. There is a warm, colorful atmosphere. Too hot sometimes in the summer. They could use an air conditioner.
