What to do and see in Newport, Rhode Island (RI): The Best Shopping

August 23, 2021 Kandra Bartel

Once the summer playground of America's wealthiest families, Newport remains a popular vacation destination at any time of year. The famous mansions, each more opulent than the last, offer detailed tours and give a fascinating glimpse into Gilded Age extravagance. While the town rightly emphasizes its history with a variety of museums and tours, Newport also has a vibrant, contemporary side, made manifest in quirky shops and great restaurants.

Took the opportunity whilst staying at Ivy Lodge to go to the glassworks and make some glass ornaments. There are several glass-making things you can try. Book in advance, because it seems popular, even in winter. The owner and staff were very welcoming and friendly, and the whole experience fun.

The shop is well set up. There are so many items to choose from it's difficult to make a decision. They can tell you what type of materials are used, the background of certain items. Good price range. Netsukes, knives, jewelry, carvings, guitar picks and so much more. Take some time to really look. Shop is small and so many items!

The Third & Elm Press

This was a rare opportunity to understand the art of the woodcut. The studio is filled with prints, three hand-presses and hundreds of blocks. Located on a corner in Newport's most picturesque 18/19th century neighborhood, it is simply like stepping back into the past. Miss Nesbitt is a treasure - willing to share her story and her art. Due to her age, many of the woodcuts are limited in availability so don't wait to go visit with her. I will never forget the experience.
