Where to Eat in Newport: The Best Restaurants and Bars

April 14, 2018 Jasper Kershner

Once the summer playground of America's wealthiest families, Newport remains a popular vacation destination at any time of year. The famous mansions, each more opulent than the last, offer detailed tours and give a fascinating glimpse into Gilded Age extravagance. While the town rightly emphasizes its history with a variety of museums and tours, Newport also has a vibrant, contemporary side, made manifest in quirky shops and great restaurants.

I always look for the good places to dine when I travel, so I researched this one in advance of my trip, and made sure to make a reservation several weeks in advance (a must!). So glad we were able to dine here. It was a superior experience all the way around -- ambiance, food, service. A must-try, if you're a foodie.

This little shop has great sandwiches, soups, and salads. We had the ham/egg/cheese stuffed croissant. But, our favorite was the black forest ham/gruyere/dijon stuffed croissant. Their fresh baked pastries are also excellent..until they run out. Don't miss the pumpkin chocolate chip croissant with salted caramel (I'm guessing this one is seasonal).

Because this place has so few seats, I would recommend coming early or waiting until slightly after the breakfast/lunch hours. It's VERY COZY. Then again, you could order to go and enjoy a beautiful stroll around the neighborhood.

This place literally makes the BEST burger, and I have eaten MANY burgers. The hormone and no antibiotics used meat is ground in house, and cooked to perfection. I had the Mickey D's burger, simple with mustard, pickles, tomato, lettuce and sharp cheddar. The chili dog was ok, and the falafel was good, just ask for extra tzatziki.

We dine in Newport on a regular basis and tend to go to the same places over and over. It was restaurant week in Newport so we decided to try something different and go to Jo's. And are we glad we did! This is now going to be one of our regular go to places in town. The ambiance was lovely, the service was great (either the owner or manager stopped by to check on us!), and the food was outstanding. Definitely check it out!

We love it here! The food is great! The desserts are yummy, my daughter just loves the chocolate brownie paired with a lemonade. The only reason why I don’t give it a 5 is because I feel like I am a generous tipper and I would like not to clean after my own table when tipping so well.

Thames street is a shopping area with several restaurants, and yes,it is a brick street, hence;Brick Alley Pub! Great service and food. We were lucky enough to be there on Tuesday when they serve Albondigas soup. It sounds weird but if you like a little Mexican flavor, you will love this. I'm not a big meatball fan but the Mexican meatballs in this soup are the best ever! They have a huge menu and is vegan friendly. If your planning to go to this beautiful city add this restaurant to your list of things to do!

Inside this characterful Victorian house, we experienced another delicious, true Italian meal in a quiet and quaint atmosphere. We began with the tenderloin carpaccio, and followed with two irresistible pasta dishes as our entrees -the bombetta (gnocchi) and cheese and spinach cannelloni (a special that day). Wine list is filled with a great variety of Italian choices, and we were happy to select a Nerello from Sicily. Our waitress was wonderfully attentive and paced the meal beautifully. As this was a birthday celebration for my husband, she added a candle to the rich chocolate “bomb” cake that we shared.
