What to do and see in Newark-on-Trent, England: The Best Nightlife

November 7, 2021 Darwin Bolte

Newark-on-Trent or Newark /ˈnjuːək/ is a market town and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of the county of Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands of England. It stands on the River Trent, the A1 (on the route of the ancient Great North Road), and the East Coast Main Line railway. The origins of the town are possibly Roman, as it lies on an important Roman road, the Fosse Way. The town grew around Newark Castle, now ruined, and a large market place, now lined with historic buildings. It was a centre for the wool and cloth trades. In the English Civil War, it was besieged by Parliamentary forces and had to be relieved by Prince Rupert in a battle known as the Relief of Newark.

Bad Apple Cider Bar

The Bad Apple Cider Bar is part of the Scrumpy Wasp Cider Mill in East Markham. It's easy to find and has plenty of parking. There's a variety of seating from comfy armchairs around the fire to tables and chairs and bar stools. The highlight is obviously the range of Scrumpy Wasp ciders - other drinks are available and included a beer from the Pheasantry Brewery, which is on the other side of the village, when we visited. And, for the designated driver or to continue your cider drinking later, you can buy bottles and boxes to take away. What's not like about that?

The service was great and the pub has a great atmosphere. Tv’s are great to watch the sport on too. Will definitely be back again. Fab thank you

We visited Just Beer while on a tour of Newark recently. We were following the Civil War Ale Trail guide, featuring Just Beer. It was one of the best on the tour. The beer is well kept and, in this election year, we were drawn to the draft Toxic Trumps Tipple from the Atomic Brewery. Much better than the namesake and, had we not had to move on, we’d have had another. As it was, I asked for the pump label when it was finished with, and the team kindly sent it to me. Above and beyond. You need to make Just Beer Micropub a key stop on you ale trail in Newark. Highly recommended.

The Flying Circus

Reviewed By jwabash73 - Glasgow, United Kingdom

We two friends were in Newark for the Civil War Ale Trail, and the Flying Circus was our first hostelry to visit. It was also the best. Staff have taken all the necessary precautions in these pandemic times, so we felt safe to enjoy our pint in the relaxed and hospitable surroundings. There is a wide range of beers, from English to international, and the jar of Reverend James did not disappoint, and showed that the ales are well maintained and presented. On top of that, the music selection was first class, Blues especially. Watch out as you may well be tempted do buy albums online while you sit and enjoy your pint. We were sad to leave, but the Civil War sights beckoned. As an aside, the Ale Trail is well worth a day or two out, and make sure that you visit the Flying Circus!
